I've been to that site before.
It is good. I appreciate that the author seems to understand where the suicidal person is coming from instead of attacking them for being stupid or some such as people usually do.

very good site. We should bump this thread often!

I highly recommend the book How I Stayed Alive When my Brain was Trying to Kill Me. I had suicidal ideations years ago and it helped me tremendously.

alt.suicide.holiday and alt.suicide.bus.stop have always been the most helpful communities to me- although the website and forum disappeared last november. :*(

They have a very nonjudgmental philosophy and have helped a lot of people over many years. Now the group is sort of fragmented, though you still have access to them through the new ASBS related irc channel and the usenet group.

This is going to sound horrible, but I couldn't pay attention long enough. I got bored after the first paragraph or so. Was there a point to it or the same "don't kill yourself! We love you!" noise?

I like that website. It doesn't ask you "why do it?"; it asks you "why now?" Instead of trying to talk you out of it in a cliche and patronizing way, it simply tells you to wait a little longer, just in case there is a chance that things improve. At the same time, it also tells you that you have the option to go through with it (this is radically different from most suicide prevention sites). It also covers issues such as the stigma of suicide and the misguided efforts of people trying to "help". Finally, it directs someone who's suicidal to helpful resources.

One mistake it makes is telling the person to talk to a psychotherapist. It's actually one of the worst things for a suicidal person to do. Most likely, the therapist will contact the police, to have the suicidal person confined to a mental institution. While in it, he/she will be subjected to morally degrading brainwashing and contact drug injections. (At least that's how one doctor described the consequences when I admitted having thoughts of suicide.) Maybe the owner of the site lives outside the U.S., in a country with a more tolerant look on suicide.

Yeah, I would never admit suicidal thoughts to a therapist or to anyone who knew my real name and address. A helpline is a good idea though.

Actually, some helplines have caller ID. So they can trace your number if they see the need to. Even your personal cell phone can be traced to your name, let alone your landline. If you want to be super-safe, buy a low-end prepaid cell phone (costs about $20), and call the helpline from that. If you no longer need to call the helpline, you can just smash the phone with a hammer and throw it out. That way, since the phone will be gone, there'll be no way to trace you.
