It is becoming increasingly obvious that I am the only one who dosen't know my personality, how I behave and other things about me. Other people seem to know me better than I know myself.

I have wondered for the longest time... how is self-awareness obtained?

one begins by listening. To one's self, to others talking about one's self.

Try a thought experiment - run back any situation that puzzled you, as if you were a stranger watching it.

I'm not sure it's something that can be taught...

I'm not sure it can be taught, either. Some people have brain dysfunction that prevents insight and/or judgment.

Through philosophy, perhaps?

install mirrors on every wall.
buy an MRI machine and studiously inspect all your slices.
if you need to know what you are thinking, then an EEG device may help greatly in the effort, as you could just read the printout and happily go to bed knowing what you think.

I could know what I think, but I can't come up with a discription that seems accurate.

Through self-observation. Put a mirror behind/above your computer monitor so you can see your own posture, expressions, and unconscious movements. Make video of yourself walking down the hall or fixing yourself something to eat and watch it. Keep a diary or blog and write about the tendencies you observe in yourself. After you know what your own tendencies are, you can start to predict how you will respond in future circumstances, and you'll have more control over your actions.
