Last few nights my cat has hit the button on my power strip that powers my computer and shut it off when I was in the middle of something on the computer and I lost my work.

I told him not to do it and he still does it. Making me really angry. This is the type of crapI expect from a child, and why I choose to never have a child. I don't want to get rid of him but I'm sick of this. I have tryed to train him not to do it but he still does it.

Very mad and frustrated.

Just tape a cap or something over the button.
I had to rig up my mom's phone once because the cat was making long distance calls.
Cover it and you'll be fine.

how exactly are you telling your cat not to?
"kitty, i have told you before, and i will tell you again, when you power off my computer, all my work is lost!"

get down on all 4's, open your eyes wide, and hiss as hard as you can. if you think its sounds too stupid, then have fun w your cat powering off your computer.

if hissing doesnt work (it really should), then grab the cat by the scruff, and throw it away from there.

CATS unlike DOGS do not CARE wether or not the owner is happy, and wont do you a favor.
the cat must learn that certain actions make you - NOT its owner, but its family - aggressive.
cats avoid aggression.

show the cat that her actions make you aggressive and scary. you dont have to worry about "permanently" scaring the cat or anything, a RARE time my cat misbehaves (she did all her misbehaving as a kitten) i hiss at her like a lunatic, she jumps away, and 10 seconds later shes happy as a lark again.

Cat's don't understand human language. You just have to train him to not do it. Or don't have him in the room with you when you're on the computer.

though cats cannot understand english you can train them not to do certain things. when you see your cat on your desk use a spray bottle and spray him or her with a little watter, don't go crazy with it, just one or two squirts. since he or she won't like this he or she will stay off the desk' this may take a while but eventualy he or she will get the picture

another good advice. simple association. works wonders.

the cat's mind will work like:
playing-with-power-switch = discomfort

Water + Electronics = Bad.

I suggest using a waste basket or other concave object to cover the strip; be sure to port it or use porous material to allow for air flow and heat resistant materials. This way the cat doesn't touch the cord, and there isn't risk to life, limb, feline or computer.

I would concur that the best thing to do would make the power strip inaccessable to the cat if possible. I have a cat who's main source of recreation is causing me pain and misery. i am surprised that she does not randomly power off my computer, but I am sure that she would if she knew it would bother me...You must have a pretty smart cat.

ANYway...um....yeah...put something over the switch. Don't get rid of the cat..
