I remember reading an article about that when it happened. Weren't they doing something with fusion reactions and magnetic fields?

Yes. Now I think it is plausible to consider focus fusion with hydrogen-boron as an anwer to the "energy crisis" that is holding the world hostage. And the best thing about Hydrogen-Boron fusion is that it is not radioactive, unlike Deuterium-Tritium fusion.
