I went to make a No Bake Cheesecake and went step by step from the box and still needed help and mixed the filling to much etc. I even was confused on the two white bags in the box until I looked at the opposite side to see the names FILLING and CRUMBS on the other side. YES I'm THAT STUPID!! !! !! :-(

I hate cooking. If I follow a recipe, I always manage to screw it up. I'm better off making pasta, or some sort of meat, with rice and a vegetable.

I think my problem is I follow recipes too literally and get frustrated if I don't cut an onion correctly. I always have to get reassurance from my mom that I'm preparing the food correctly, otherwise I feel totally imcompetent.

They always give you dodgy instructions. I get bits of the recipe in my head and then make up the rest, things usually turn out reasonably edible.

It may help to watch cooking shows. Even though they go too fast for you to pick up the recipes or write them down you can get a feel for the jargon and how to do certain things. I like websites like Epicurious too. You can get a lot of information about food and different tasks involved when preparing. It makes following the recipes a little easier when you know the terminology.

I am a pretty good cook and can make stuff without recipes, but it took practice- I started cooking and baking as a kid. I still screw stuff up sometimes.

Bless their hearts :P .

Like today I was making homemade pasta, and I was kneading the dough, clearly doing a poor job at it... going too slow and not putting enough elbow grease into it, so finally I just stuck my tail between my legs, grinned sheepishly, and then let my mom take over. I'm a quitter too I guess, don't even make an attempt to improve my cooking skills  .

i am too GD'd lazy to bother reading and following recipes, and forget about cooking anything other than zapping it in a micro. sometimes even nuking is too much work and i will just eat something cold out of the can. when i get a wild hare [hair?] and actually feel like trying to cook something, i have to stand over the damned thing for hours, because if i lose my cooking train of thought to do something like go to the bathroom or answer the phone or whatever, i end up with a smoking pot full of charcoal due to my having forgotten about it after the distraction and having taken a nap or something else rather than going back to the cookpot like i was supposed to do.

I dont have a clue how to use a cooker, even though I had to use one in school for nearly 5 years, I never really picked it up and the teacher had to come and help me all the time
Thankgod for microwaves!

I think that the microwave was the greatest invention.

I actually cook quite often, and am the type of Aspie that absolutely needs a recipe for at least the first time I make something, after I know the gist I can tweak away and tailor it to fit my tastes. I think of cooking as being very similar to origami, there are a few basic techniques that can be combined to form complex results, and a bit of practice makes them quite simple. I found that a simple way to learn culinary knife work quickly was to throw away my garlic press and hand puree all of my garlic, I got very good at intricate cutting that way. I do all the cooking at my house, as well as for parties and gatherings and have a bit of a following among my friends because I'm always introducing them to delicious and interesting new cuisines.

I could build a robot that does a better job of cooking than I will ever do

Then again, 'Microwave' almost falls under the above definition. :P
