1869. The year before my life went to all hell. I graduated early and at the top of my class. Originally, I didn't even wish to be in the G.A.R., let alone lead it into battle. The New England War was disasterous for everyone. of the 60 officers that graduated in 1869, thirty of them were lost in the war. Of those, 15 were lost at sea when their transport was caught in a storm and foundered. The other 15 died the hard way.
