Here goes: In 1982, a TV transmission tower collapsed, killing 7 people, and crushing the studios of a TV station that had just gone on the air.

A large portion of my hometown is a Superfund site.
The fertilizer used in the Oklahoma bombing was made on that site.

Was burned to the ground during the Civil War.
The world can thank Dr.William Hudson for his research in iodine or there would be a lot of goiters around.

The town was the epicenter of a Spiritualist cult around 1900.  The cultists built a barn-like structure in which they held their rituals.  When the cult fell out of favor with other similar cults in the area (for reasons unknown), the cult sold the building to the city.  It has been used as used as a skating rink, dance hall, meeting place, factory, and summer theatre venue ever since.

Some say that Confederate gold is buried somewhere on the property.  Others say the place is haunted.  Still others say that members of the cult return every 7 years to "recharge" a diabolic icon with the blood of an innocent victim.

None of this has been proven, however, even though the legends gain popularity (and a few more embellishments) with each new generation.

25000 years ago a huge earthquake 200 miles away from the city created a mountain range here.

It took 70 years from the first decision to build metro system to opening the first section of the first line.

When we first built our subway in the Seventies, here in Washington DC, it was farthest southern ( and closest to the Equator) subway system in the world. Subways generate lotsa heat. Those trains passing through tubes (I suppose) act like diesel cylinders. Dont know if ours is still the most tropical subway system in the world or not.

There are a couple of metro lines in North Africa.

The first was Cairo Metro, opened in 1987.

But certainly South of Washington, DC, there's whole Latin America:
