Oh god, I am so embarassed.

Of my 80's life (I was a little kid then), I used to love the 80's pop, and still do. I only JUST realized the meaning of two of my favorite songs.

She Bop - Cyndi Lauper
Borderline - Madonna

I can't believe it! I used to play my synth (a DX7 ironically), to these tunes. Now I can't even hit a note, because all I can picture in my head is the meaning of the songs.

Has anyone else had this happen, so late in their lives, only to find the meaning of their favorite songs? It took me what, 15 years to "get it". And I did listen to the lyrics, and just today, it clicked in, and now I've been listening to all my albums, to hear what other tunes of the 80's did this.

Well I can only say that I can relate...

I've done something because of a band I liked that's so embarrassing I will never tell it to anyone. (well unless someone I love begs me... in a certain ultra pathetic light... it's funny)

I just don't understand, that the name of the songs were literally, staring me in the face, and I know the "jargon" of sex and things like that, but how could I have ignored it? It was obvious! :(

I am familiar with what
She-bop is about, but i guess i will have to look at the 'borderline' lyrics... is that about the M-word too?

did you miss it on Billy Idol's "Dancing with Myself" too?

For me the only one which I missed completely until a few months ago was ZZ Top's "Pearl Necklace".
As for the others, I love slipping them into the mix when I DJ my own parties for my friends. hehe

I do that with all kinds of music. One day I will hate it with a passion and then sometime later in life I will find it irresistible to listen to. For instance, I like the band My Chemical Romance but when I first heard them I wasn't impressed. I went to one of their concerts and ever since then I have been totally obsessed with their music. lol...I don't know why it happens but its always good to find music that you can relate to.

I don't know if this is relevant here, I've been wanting to get it out of my system for a while, but there's some music that I think most people aren't supposed to get, or that they think they get, but wouldn't really have a clue... Have you ever heard a song called "Creep" by Radiohead? Or "Bliss" by Muse? Lulz, they're not dirty... but the point is, that some people can't possibly comprehend the sadness in the lyrics of these songs, because these are the sort of people who the songs were written about. And yet they listen through the albums once, and claim to really "relate" to the music... oh well xD

Anyway, what about "Turning Japanese" by The Vapors?

I agree with you, some songs are impossible to relate to but you can still enjoy them. I like song "super massive black hole" by muse. I can't relate to it but every time I hear it I can't help but to turn it up and start singing. I also love funny songs and parodies of popular songs.

I did know about "Dancing with myself", but only since 4 months ago.

a song like that for me would probably be "Teenagers" by My Chemical Romance, i just liked the song, i didn't realise that it was about teens becoming suicide bombers and so on

In retrospect it seems rather naive for me to have wondered why The Starland Vocal Band would designate sky rockets in flight as an afternoon rather than evening delight....

I'm debating if I should even continue playing to the tunes of these songs.

See, I love 80's pop, the DX7 is my favorite synthesizer, and I love programming mine to sound like the ones in the songs, and I love to play along, but after learning about these two songs (which I love to play too), I just feel weird playing to a song, especially one about female orgasm's!

Trust me. "Borderline" is not about orgasms.

I guess this thread is now about your favorite songs about masturbating? How about "Whip It" by Devo? :D
