I drink about 8 cans a day and have been warned about it by my GP. I have always liked a drink but it got worse due to bad neighbours about 10 years ago.
Post your experiences here and let's all help each other beat the booze.
Currently recovering from heart defects for which the usual risk indicators; intake of too much fat, salt and sugar, a family history of the complaint, and not enough exercise, don't apply, so the quacks blame it on the only one left; alcohol consumption!
Like you, I enjoy a drink, but I've know a great many people who drank a lot more and didn't seem to suffer from it. Also, my usual tipple for the most recent years was red wine and beer, only quite recently enjoying more hard likker.
That was then, and I've not touched a drop for over 15 months, having cut down for a couple of years before that.
I'll admit that I'm now in pretty good shape, but so one would expect with all the pills I have to take. I don't get around as well as I used to (no more 20 mile Sunday hikes) but who does having reached 70? My memory seems to have become notably sharper, but not that I've noticed any improvement in Sudoku, nor remembering passwords, and besides, I've been taking fish oil tablets in the meantime, which might account for that.
So, was it the alcohol? I have my doubts, and I've many projects in hand, so I need my wits about me, and I won't be partakeing any time soon. That's not to say I never will; if I get a place of my own with space for invited guests, then it would be unsociable not to have a few drinks with them, right? I'll limit to one drink for each day, of course (the first will be for June the 3rd, 1927) and it boils down to balancing enjoyment and risk. You make your choice and take your chances.
I'm pretty sure, though, that I'll never again drink myself to sleep each evening, just because I've got nothing better to do...
