That's how young Americans like to get their jollies.

It is 9:00 (21:00) where I live and I can hear the pops, bangs, whirls. I'm grateful I have earplugs.
However, I'm worried someone will set something off. It will land on my house, and set it on fire, I will sleep through without waking up.

The morning weather news guy was kept away till 11:00 last night. They have to be up and into work at 2am. As someone that use to have to come into work in the middle of the night, I deeply feel for him.

I think I would have to tap back into my childhood to figure out why people like fireworks. It think I liked the idea of fireworks, plus we could not really afford fireworks when I was a kid.

Pwoo. Pwoo pwoo. BOOM. pooo pooo
silence
silence
klOOk
BOOM
POO POO POO (that was from across the street
pop pop pop. pop. poppoppoppop. pop
rattle rattle rattle rattle rattle rattle rattle
BOOM - again, across the street
BOOM

sigh

In the past I've said this is the one day of the year that I won't call people obnoxious a*sholes for setting off fireworks. I know it'll happen so I can plan for it and deal with it, unlike any other day when I'm not expecting it so I'm trying to sleep and people decide to keep the whole f**king neighborhood up while blowing all their fingers off.

I think I've changed my mind now. The point of this day is to celebrate America and there's nothing to celebrate anymore. If you want to blow up an effigy of T***p, I can tolerate that, but I don't want to hear people celebrating something that's no longer worth celebrating.

Why do people start setting off fireworks last month?

Because the 4th was coming, idk seems every year people start setting them off earlier and earlier. Of course tonight is the end of 4th of july its about 1am where I am so technically its already the 5th and people are still shooting off lots of fireworks. I don't really mind though because I like fireworks, but idk some people may be trying to sleep by now so it may not be very nice for them.

I was so tired that I actually fell asleep to the sound of nearby fireworks (at dusk). But when I awoke, there were none. And that is very weird. Normally things carry on until 4am ish, but it's been completely silent since at least midnight. So I have to wonder at the why... Is it that fireworks cost too much atm? Or was there a big change in fireworks laws? Or are people just not as happy (money, politics, etc) & celebratory? It's great for scared pets tho.

EtA: Great story kokopelli.

I thought 4th of July was only in America, does mean America birthday? History was my worst subject in school. I wish people wasn't sooooooo stupid, fireworks are illegal, they been going off for over 4 hours.

Yeah, I have mixed feelings, like it does not feel like there is really anything to celebrate, like with all the deportation crap, like they've been deporting people who are following all the processes to become citizens. Like imagine you finally are going to your last court date to get your citizenship, but then all the sudden you're chained up and deported or sent to the prison you will never leave in El Salvador called CECOT instead. Like that's just really awful like yeah if trump was really just sending away immigrant criminals and rapists then I would not have much of a problem, but instead he is deporting grandmothers, grandpas, fathers and mothers and even children with cancer who need to maintain their treatment or they might die. Like they are tormenting, threatening and abusing vulnerable members of our communities and its not right. Its still my country though and I hope it can improve, because I don't want to abandon it...and I probably can't afford to anyways, but yeah it f*****g sucks right now...I for sure fly the upside down american flag because yeah S.O.S. but also I still like fireworks. I didn't go to any firework events but in my current apartment I could see various fireworks going on around the city from my patio so that has been kind of cool as much as I am not really feeling the spirt of the 4th of july this time around.

I don't know English people celebrate it but maybe American people living in the UK do

Fireworks aren't illegal over here but it's hard to buy them out of season

Give it time and we probably will end up celebrating the 4th of bloody July. We seem to have adopted quite a few other American customs in recent years, eg school 'proms', Black Friday, Hallowe'en.....
