In a sense they are neither Friend or Foe. They are observers.
They are from a very, very, very, very advanced civilization and they are watching.
They are trying to determine if the human race is capable of moving on to the next level.
We are standing at the edge of global and complete annihilation.
They will decide whether we are worth keeping.
Whether we will advance to the next level.

The human brain is a very complex organism. We have multiple brains. Some exist on the left side of our skull and they are normally the daytime brains. Some exist on the right side of our skull and they are our night time brains that exist in REM and deep NREM sleep. But we have some very unusual brain tissue that exist inside the structure, that allow external communications with very advances species.

My best guess is they will let us decide our own path.

Human selfishness and greed is an irrational and primitive characteristic where individuals act in their own self-interest at the expense of the rest of the species and planet. I am not surprised, we are still to dangerous to join the galactic federation.

Of course they could be pulling the strings and (yes) maybe our expiry date is nigh and a new model of human is being prepared to replace us.

And then again they could be watching from afar, amused at our paranoia.

And then again we might be alone in this cold empty universe.
