With that movie's troubled history, it seriously needs some appreciation.

Ahhh, man, I totally regret buying that VHS of the movie:

If only they advertised "The Thief" like this, it would've been a blockbuster:

And the commercial that introduced me to "The Thief":

I strongly recommend the "Recobbled Cut" and see how the film would've been like without the distracting voiceovers, cheesy songs, and cheaply animated scenes.:

I used to like that movie very much when I was little. My cousin and I would always laugh at the scene where the thief gets his ass whooped by a little old lady with bananas.

The Thief: "What does that old hag have in her hand? Is it a gold statue, no, it's bananas?"

(The Thief gets beaten up by the old lady)

The Thief: "I think she use to work in my school cafeteria."

The Thief (when he crawls up one of the palace pipes): "Oh, Mom, what are you doing here?"

The Thief's mother: "What am I doing here? What are you doing here? You never visit. You never call. Have you got a girl yet? Come on, push. You look skinny."

The Thief: (when he falls out of the trash can and into the moat) "I can't help but question the color of this (greenish-yellowish) water. I'm gonna stink for days. I just had this robe dry-cleaned."

I read the book, when I was in school. It was a really good book. :)

"The Thief and the Cobbler" is a movie, not a book.

It looks like a really nice movie from the clips I have seen on You Tube.

The Recobbled Cut is a masterpiece (despite the crudeness in places). I used to hang out at Garrett's forum for a while, but I guess since the third edition, he hasn't had much luck in finding new footage. Roy Disney was talking about going through the Disney vaults and restoring the film as much as possible, but I guess he's probably got higher priorities =/

I tried watching the Mirimax cut once, and it was just awful, I turned it off in like three minutes :x

From an New York Times article of "The Thief":
http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/135001/ ... t/overview

Quote:
Arabian Knight (also shown as The Thief and the Cobbler) was reportedly long in production and held back from release for a time because the distributors were afraid that many Americans would not be inclined to see a family film set in the Middle East in the wake of the Gulf War.

I hate to say this, but I'm actually happy that Miramax offered to distribute the film but I think they should've left "The Princess and the Cobbler" version alone because it's almost faithful to the original version.
