I might giving my country a bad name ,but meh.... wrong practices should not be hidden.
"Hunting" is probably the most popular and practiced male "sport/hobby" here , it is as popular as soccer if not more, popular to the extent that most of our politicians themselves reunite and arrange hunting trips. As ret*ds as they are , they proudly show their photos on the newspaper. It's probably the only "sport" here for all social classes here.
In my workplace , there are only 5 guys (including me) out of around 30 who oppose hunting while all other are hardcore 'hunters'.
It's hunters' heaven here , rules are there but poorly applied , poor restrictions, so if you re some lazy bloodthirsty bastard hunter , please apply for a trip to here .
The hunting ways commonly used here are too inhuman to beyond imagination. First , all weapon types are used for bird hunting here , some which were remained from the civil war and others are brand new , from manual rifles to automatic rifles, to shotguns and even , yes, to machine guns! with any imaginable types of ammos , big bullets, small bullets , explosive bullets...
The hunting's popularity here is most probably due to the past war and weapons' obsession and they're inheriting this obsession to their kids , but this time , against animals.
"Hunters" here , not only use heavily killer guns to hunt , but they also use tools to cheat nature , the most common used tool is the "MP3 too" , a loud mp3 player with recorded bird call songs attached to a tree to lure hundred of birds of the same species to come on it.
The result?
Something like that (notice the cars):
- Saida, Lebanon.
This is relatively little 'quantity' , I saw worse number of bird corpses , I call them huge death carpets. This is not hunting , this is a massacre.
Another inhuman way I encountered , is the "Master Bird" way. I run once across a bird shop and I noticed a tag "Master bird for $2000 - finch " , I heard about those Master birds before but I never asked what they are , so I asked the vendor what's the whole fuss about the Master birds. He told me that they are trained birds to perform specific calls and they're used to lure preys of its species much like the mp3 player , he claims that it's even far more effective than the mp3 player and so the 'hunters' I asked later.
Basically, what I've learnt from the vendor, the master bird (usually a finch) is a healthy male taken care exceptionally since birth , totally isolated from other birds during its infant and adolescence years so he doesn't learn "wrong calls" from other birds , usually kept in dark most of the time to decrease distractions , only awaken to take "learning sessions" which means to be exposed to recorded calls for hours , the process is repeated on daily basis till he masters the effective calls used for luring others. In other term, the caged bird becomes a live death trap for his own species.
I don't get it , a great part of hunting's pleasure is supposed to be about exploration and tracking , but our 'hunters' seem prefer to wait stand on their spot , set a lure and wait for hordes of coming preys to slaughter.
A colleague of mine told me that he's used to hunt (by using the mp3 trick) while drinking Arak and smoking Hookah. Another colleague boasted (by showing a pic him with the prey) for shooting down an eagle, and he's a scout principal! I was like "bravo , you're officially a such terrible example of a scout".
Deers got extinct here since the 80s and now they're finishing the birds and the wild boars.

Lose that thought. These people enjoy killing and that's all.
Here in civilised England the local yobs get their jollies gunning down dazzled creatures and betting on which dog gets to tear them apart.

A very saddening thread. I am afraid that humans are nowhere near as advanced as they imagine, man can be a cruel species.
As for hunting, I dont like it. It is hard here for farmers though as they find themselves overrun with rabbits if they are not hunted Because they are an introduced species, they are not evolved to live in this country and they are actually so successful here that they multiply to huge proportions
. But I still dont feel good about it, and I refuse to eat the rabbits that have been shot, that I am offered from time to time.
What sickens me though, is people who hunt for fun, not because they have any reason to do so. They just do it for sport. It is so awful, I dont understand it, how someone can get pleasure out of hurting an animal.
I am edging towards becoming vegetarian, I dont eat any red meat or pork, and I eat chicken and fish sometimes. I would like to become mainly vegetarian eventually though.

My family has hunted deer and game birds here in the U.S., and they done it legally within the "D.N.R." limits.
So there are certain times when you can only hunt, and you are also required to get a "tag" beforehand for the gender of the animal to be taken. A friend once shot the wrong gender and it cost him $500 for that deer.... it was an honest mistake on his part, but the fine could have been much worse here, depending on the circumstances.
In Indiana you can use a bow, 357 magnum and up handguns, muzzle loader, or a 12 gauge shotgun-( rifled slugs) for deer. No high powered long range hunting rifles for deer in this state. If you bow hunt I believe the season extends another two weeks.
If you take a deer out this hunting season, the Department of Natural resources can take/impound whatever was on hand at the site.
I've heard of them impounding whole trucks with all the equipment, and I mean you totally lose your vehicle, your firearm/s as they then auction it all off later.
If you are Native American you can hunt and fish anytime without any limits, though.
Deer, if properly prepared, as adding fat to this lean meat, taste great. Wild turkey, quail, and ducks are delectable too.
Most folks here like to line their stomachs more than their egos( I believe).
I agree with humanely hunting animals for food and for population control. I think that it's better for someone to eat a humanely-killed deer than to purchase pork from a pig that has suffered in a factory farm. In the case of population control, it is sometimes more humane to just kill a few animals in a very large population than to let most of them starve from the extreme competition for food. The idea that people enjoy killing animals still disgusts me, though.

About hunting, though, and overkill - as a species, we found the perfect way to hunt a long time ago, and there's little need to go about it any differently. The prey to be hunted are captured alive, confined somewhere, allowed to reproduce in confinement¹, then killed; this is done on an... uh, agricultural scale and called farming. (Heh - normally we'd say "on an industrial scale" to imply that something was done massively, but agricultural implies using every spare scrap of land for it... ) It's arguably more cruel to cram untold millions of the poor little birdies into sheds where they never see daylight than it is to machine-gun them here and there...
Not that the life of most animals in the wild is good, but it's quite easy to farm them worse.
I suppose that the fetishisation of the hunting art as a test of man vs beast may reduce the amount of animal cruelty - by potentially diverting people into less cruel modes of hunting - but it's partly a modern myth, developed when hunting in efficient ways is no longer needed. The purpose of hunting is (or should be) to put food on the table, and whatever accomplishes that most efficiently (while still retaining long-term stocks and so on and so on) and with the minimum of cruelty should be used.
Dunno whether the Maronites have any wackily stupid slaughter practices but do the Muslims of Lebanon share the idiotic "cruelly kill all animals you're going to eat by slitting their throat while rambling about God" thing? prospects for improvement not good if killing animals cruelly is seen as not just acceptable but "divinely" mandated.
¹Fishing is the great exception, though you could argue that fish in some areas of the seas are de facto confined in the same manner as a deer park.

Hunter here.
O, and Joker, "exploding" bullets are more humane in regards to hunting. In fact, most places in the world don't allow people to hunt with solid projectiles on game such as deer, like military full metal jacketed ammunition, as the round can cause minimal tissue damage, even with a good hit. The result is an animal wounded that will run away and die later on.
Contrary to popular belief, there's a lot of ethical hunters out there. I for example loathe baiting, sitting in a hide, using any form of navigational aid, and so on and so forth. I'll hunt on foot; tracking and stalking, which is part of the experience for me. I use a firearm, but that's because I like them.
I don't understand how people eat animals for fun, at least their honest about, it no offense

Eh, I don't really see how using a recorded bird call or a trained bird to call others is any different than duck or coyote calling, long respected arts among hunters. Bird hunting with rifles doesn't sound terribly effective, and is dangerous as hell to boot, as a rifle bullet on an upward trajectory could travel several miles before hitting something.
