How often do you hear this? Can you remember anyone who has said it and followed through? I feel like the people who really stop posting don't say stuff like that.

People who make posts like that are just attention-seeking, they just want people to come along and beg them not to leave so they get an ego boost.

I don't think he's actually leaving, he's just making a comment on this type of thread.

This. If I ever was to make such a post I know there's no hiding that would be my motivation. If leaving forums just leave them quietly.

I used to reply with something like "Door ... doorknob ... et cetera", but even that began to grow old.

IMO, "I'm leaving WP forever" is posted by people who have not yet worked up enough courage to post a fake suicide threat.

There have been two times since I joined the WrongPlanet that I truly intended on leaving forever. Both times I did leave for around a few months at a time. I did post that I was leaving---but for me it was not for attention getting or ego boosting. The reason why I did it was so that my online friends here would know where I had gone---and the reasons why I was leaving. I did it out of courtesy. But it is true that some people would probably do it for attention or ego boosting. It is interesting how I have been unable to stay away from this site. Although there are things that cause me anxiety, there are far too many valuable things here at the WrongPlanet that helps me.

I was joking! And I think I already know what the avatar is; a tangle of tapeworms? Or ticker tape? Cash register receipts? Anyhow, I was going along with the " I'm going!". "Oh, no, please don't!" scenario; that's also a form of trolling, too, isn't it? Sylkat

I hear that quite often on forums. * this one included * In fact, I left a forum because of certain things. I didn't say I was leaving but, I just stop posting there.

Dear jm, Thank you for enlarging your avatar: it's beautiful...it reminds me very much of Mayan artwork found on their temple walls...actually, that's what I thought it was, really..as for the 'I'm going to leave' messages, it is hard to tell when a writer (poster?) is genuinely depressed or being manipulative...Sylkat

This is the only forum I've liked so far - have left 3 or 4 others (quietly :) )
Sorry - you're going to have to put up with me a while longer  :D

I said my farewells once on here, but all I needed was to sort out a few personal problems and cut back on the amount of time I was on the site for. I didn't do it for any sort of ego boost or whatever, just to say goodbye to a few people that might have missed me and to give an explanation to them.

I don't see any point in just going "cold turkey" and leaving though. I just post now in moderation.
