In 1998 when I was 34 years old. My husband did some side work for this old couple and they gave him a computer in exchange for it. It was old and I don't remember what it had on it, but we had to get a modem installed. It was huge and had a floppy drive. We knew nothing about computers and I had a priest friend in South Alabama who worked on them, he was retired from the Church and so I mailed it to him and he sent it back with Windows 98 and AOL 6.0 I think (or maybe 5.0) and some games and stuff. My husband unboxed it when he got home and hooked it all up with Fr on the phone telling him what to do, and then we had to hang up to get online so he left it to me and I switched to the printed pages he had sent telling me how to get online with the AOL account he had set me up and what to do to look at things and how to email him once I did.
It was old when we got it, but I thought we were high tech for about two weeks till I actually noticed other people's computers.
That was when my kids started getting online too. My oldest, anyway. He was 9 at the time. My others got on when they got old enough to play a kids game and then when they started school they really got online. I remember being the computer expert in my family, showing them what to do.
Now I don't dare to anything without their approval and neither does my husband, we don't know what we are doing anymore.
