Hi Guys, has anyone heard of hair transplant? I think this is just the latest fad - I'm not a hundred percent sure what it is about, but I think it is similar to those hair extensions that became a fad a few years back. Does anyone know anything about this?

no. i'm guessing it's in between temporary hair extensions and a full scalp transplant.

This has been around for many, MANY years----like, since the 80s!! Years ago, there was a commercial about the "Hair Club for Men", and the announcer said, something like: "I'm not only the owner, I'm also a client". I think the "Hair Club" still exists; they just have a different commercial. They transplant hair from the BACK of your head, to the FRONT of your head----it's for women, as well!!

eeeeewwww ... an actual procedure? So, I guess I am wrong. It is not a fad. I just started hearing about it at work, though. Hair Club for Men? Sounds familiar ... that's like Bosley, right? It's amazing how science gives us something to think about everyday. Didn't we use to just rub aloe vera on our head for MORE hair? lol

I would look into getting it done but Bosley & Hair Club don't have any offices in my state :(

What do you mean like people cosmetically get someone else's hair transported into their scalp?

I once went to a kind of job interview for a position in a company/lab/clinic that transplanted the client's hair from some part of the body (probably the back of the head) to the part where hair was thinning. They remove an area of tissue with hair growing on it, cut the tissue into smaller pieces so that each cut piece of tissue has one (or a few?) strand of hair and then transplant the pieces to the appropriate area less densely. It's a serious matter for those that are losing hair. I wouldn't call it a fad. It's been around for quite a long time. I didn't get the job because I wasn't available on the days when they needed me.

Yes, Chelsie. Hair transplant is not a fad or a trend either. It is really known even before. Just like you, the actual procedure that I found online scared me. I think, this is only good for those who are very much decided to undergo surgery to regain their hair from a severe hair loss:)

Probably not. Rejection would be an issue, and immunosuppressants would hardly be justified just for hair loss.

Wouldn't the back of the head than be bald, so then they still have hair loss just in a different area?

They probably just take a small patch, or a few. In any case, people care what we think of them when they're facing us. They don't care what we think of them when they're walking away. :D

I figured most people who concern themselves with appearance would concern them-self with how they look at all angles. Not just the front...I did not realize walking away from someone automatically made a person stop caring what anyone they just interacted with thinks, I guess if the patches aren't noticable...but it doesn't make much sense to trade a bald spot in the front for a noticable one in the back just so it takes people longer to notice you have any hair loss.

I researched it alitte & they just take afew hairs form thick spots so those missing hairs aren't noticed by the average person just looking at you. I wish I could get it done.

^ Yes, it was something like that. They won't sacrifice the back of the head or any other part of the head to patch up the thinning part. If they did, that would be pointless. They have a way to make the whole head look as close to a normal full-haired head as possible.

Yeah, but what's wrong with being bald anyway? The way I figure it, anybody so concerned about baldness that he'd submit to surgery for it is probably not thinking very clearly. Especially since, as far as I know, those surgeries don't work all that well.

I have a friend, a woman, who lost all her hair because of chemotherapy for breast cancer. All her friends, myself included, offered to chip in to buy her a wig or some hats. She said no. She says it's not hair that makes her the person she is and she has no wish to hide her baldness.

If a woman can accept baldness without embarrassment, a man should be able to, considering how common baldness is among men.
