I always loathed worms and insects; having analyzed this particular feeling to found out what it's caused by, I came to a conclusion that it's because their small bodies are so brittle, easy to crush :x I'm always afraid I'll destroy such a creature by chance and later I'll have to wipe my hands because they will be covered with their sanies or however this liquid that fills them is called

And what about you?

I can't stand insects, especially the flies and bees that bother me whenever I try to eat outside during the summer.

I'm also afraid of hornets; I have never been stung so how should I know I'm not sensitized to?

I love all creatures, except humans. I walk with my head down to avoid crushing insects. When it rains, I sometimes spend hours picking up the worms in the road, driveway, or sidewalk to save them from being trampled by inconsiderate humans. Worms are one of the most important creatures on the planet, as they "recycle" the soil and provide it with nutrients. My favorite insect is the Praying Mantis. I love watching them and interacting with them. When a "bug" gets in my home, I calmly catch it with a giant cup and take it outside to let it be free.

Wow, I was gonna say that first sentence but I thought I'd sound too awful. I agree with all you've said.

It makes me very sad when people kill things, bugs, squirrels, etc. I don't think we can say we have respect for life if we're willing to take lives easily, even the lives of insects! If I accidentally kill a bug or a bird (I hit one with my car on the interstate once) I feel terrible about it. I get a sick feeling in my stomach. Every time I see a dead critter on the side of a road, I feel like a little piece of my soul has been lost.

I often remove insects from the sidewalks on campus where I work so people won't step on them on purpose. And I also catch insects that enter buildings and release them outside.

I found out from a Yellow Jacket sting 14 years ago that I am allergic and could die, but I still don't kill them. I respect them and am very careful if we have to interact.

I also almost lost half of my leg to a Black Widow bite when I was in college. I let her live in the loft in my dorm room and one night she bit me. My leg swelled up something awful and I had to go the Student Health Center. I didn't kill her either. I just took her outside to find a better home.

Yowza, Trigger!

I let hobo spiders live in my house. I have yet to be bothered by one. I'm a little skeptical about how dangerous they are.

I have never, I repeat, never been afraid of insects. In fact, most of my life, insects have been my greatest interest. Without them, this planet would die. Social insects are still one of the great mysteries of Darwinian evolution, and insects hold some truly remarkable records. There is a species of tiger eetle that, if it was equal to a human in size, would possess the ability to run at 1140 km/h. I could list a few more, but thats not what this is about.

I can understand some peoples fear for insects, and when they become a pest, I can accept killing them. But I do in general view the killing of insects and spiders as perfectly unnecessary, as they serve the the ecosystem far more than we do, and also live in a microcosm that we very rarely think about, but without which the entire world would die.

Furthermore, I believe that fear is most often rooted in lack of knowledge and understanding, which I think people in general need more of, anyway.

"I love all creatures, except humans."

Yep, that just about says it all for me, as well. I try so hard not to injure or kill any animals as I go about my days - they have as much right to live in this world as we do, if not more. they don't do the damage that we do.

I love everything but humans, too. It's great to see that, no matter how weird I am, there are so many kindred spirits here.

I don't particularly hate insects or spiders, but there are a few critters which I can't stand, such as worms or centipedes. When I see one, I can feel my stomach turn. If you want to see me puke my guts out, put one of those in my hand 8O.

Phobic fear of bugs and spiders, but LOVE snakes, would have one loose in the house if I could. However, when I find a spider or bug and start screaming like a little girl"Get it out of here, get it out" my next screams while I'm rapidly backing away are "Don't kill it, just throw it outside, Don't kill it, don't kill it" (Thankfully my 20 year old daughter lives upstairs and will come get them if I call her) :D
Just because I have an irrational fear doesn't mean the little creatrue has to DIE. I also walk w/ my head down so as to step around ants and stuff. Am a pacifist at heart and on a larger level I feel a connection to ALL living things. (Like physics so feel that "down at the planck scale, we're all truly "One", if someone kills the bug, I'm in esscense killing a part of myself, and everyone else. Does that make any sense?)

I live in Florida. While I have a dislike of killing things, if I let the giant cockroaches and the smaller varieties have the run of my house, I will soon have a very unpleasant infestation. Sometimes you have to pick your battles. As it is, I have to keep all my cereals and flours etc. in glass jars, and still find them trying to get in. They will, if I let them, infest the cardboard boxes of cereals and grains, (which is why I use glass canisters,) eat the glue from the my beloved books, and crawl on me as I sleep. There's a limit to what I can tolerate. My cat has no compunction whatsoever about dispatching them . I admire those of you who are kind to them, however.

I live in Florida, too--- but originally i'm from up north. Nothing could have prepared me for the 737-sized roaches down here! I loved bugs as a kid, and most of them still hold my interest ( spiders are cool and i like millipedes) but these roaches scare me--- they fly and they actually fly AT you like a warplane! YIPES!! ! Florida has some nasties we never had up north, like fire ants ( OUCH!) and black widows and noceeums(sp?). Up north we used to catch praying mantids that were bright green. We have mantids down here, but they're a different species and are sorta camoflage in coloration... greyish. still cool, though. Those damn roaches, though--- YIPES!! !
