I'd love to, but doubt I can disappear from my PhD long enough to do much. But I'll definitely let you know if I getfired and have more time.

Hey lets all go to Iraq and tell everyone how wonderful it would be for them to reject their Iraq'i ways and become american citizens.

Seriously tho Ana, not sure if people hate Canadians as much as Americans, I sure hope not you gusy did nothing wrong, but you may be connected to America in peoples eyes and you may not be received well in some nations simply because of it, i know its wrong, but our stupid government screwed things up for us citizens as well as other nations, if you go overseas u may wanna be careful and plan things out a bit before you just take off, violence has occured towards people in the past, as horrible as it is I mean you did nothing wrong, you did not invade Iraq, but something to think about, you may wanna stay home.

Why don't you just join the Peace Corps? You will find the application to join on their website...Peace Corps.gov

They will place you in a safe country overseas where you are most needed...and can still provide you with some U.S. government protection as much as they are able to...and if things turn bad, they have the ability to yank you out of the country where you are doing volunteer work for Peace Corps. Even "Doctors Without Borders" will not go into any unsafe countries like Iraq.

It is really not safe in any European/Asia country for any American citizen...especially Iraq because they hate the American government so much.

The many American tourists that visit Britain and Europe every year would disagree.

I'd go volunteer overseas in a heartbeat if I could afford it.

Peace Corps has got some standards that volunteers have to meet though. They require a college degree or at very least some specialized training in the areas that are going to be used (ie, nursing, schooling, construction, ect).

I spent a couple of years wanting to go through Peace Corps. If it was before college, I would still consider it (it was something I really did want to do), but it's not, and so I won't.

In fact, most volunteer organizations require a college degree of some sort. There are ones that you can pay to go on what's more or less a sight seeing trip and maybe help a little, but that's not ever close to the same thing. There are some that even have age restrictions above 18; I think the UN equal to Peace Corps requires people to be at least 35.

the peace corps website said they prefer a volunteer to have graduated from college. also people with majors in psychology, history, photography etc. may join. strangely, my sociology teacher said it costs money to become a volunteer...or maybe the plane ticket and such is what costs money. hmm...

now if we were to go somewhere...i'd like to go to new zealand and then ireland.

So I guess the consensus is that the Middle East is out. Hope you didn't want to go there Ana!
