Just had a rant about this on another site:
Why do bands who bill themselves under a famous name bother touring without their most iconic members? Or none of the original members at all?
Like there've been two groups that emerged after Marc Bolan's death billing themselves as T. Rex. You have to remember that T. Rex was very much a revolving-door band and their only constant was Bolan, the voice and guitar of the band. Mickey Finn was his second during the T. Rextasy days but he wasn't exactly a household name, especially as the band's success went south. But nobody bought his "new" "T. Rex", which even put out an album! Fans circulated badges saying "No Bolan, no T. Rex" and turned on the up-to-then-generally-liked Mickey for daring to use the band's name for commercial gain.
A few years pass. Mickey Finn dies and is rightfully remembered for his contributions to the original band. Apart from a couple of archive releases, very little happens in T. Rexland.
Enter Paul Fenton, drummer on the original band's lowest-selling album. He really should have learned from Mickey's disaster. But he didn't. Fan outrage once again. I was at a bar/restaurant a couple of years ago where Fenton's band was due to play and refused to see them. They were NOT the real T. Rex and never could be. I will never give money to anything exploiting Marc's memory, even if it's dressed up as a "tribute". Actual tribute acts have no original members but more class. See one of them instead
At least Queen have the decency to advertise themselves as "Queen+Paul Rodgers/Adam Lambert" and don't release any new material to differentiate themselves from the Freddie-fronted version.
And at least I'm not a Yes fan.
