When people say " that's what I think" or " that's how I feel" when called out for saying something that isn't true or a conspiracy theory

I doubt I'll last 4 years. I frequently feel like garbage mentally and physically, especially late at night. :(

When someone online shares a major struggle, trauma, illness, grief, or whatever else their dealing with and a person responds by pointing out a spelling or grammatical error that was made in the post.

Sorry I know it's not funny but I've noticed it happens a lot

It's actually really rude and dismissive even when the topic isn't a serious one

It doesn't peeve me as such but I do notice it

It can really peeve me depending on the situation. Sometimes I picture someone tearfully writing out a post, not necessarily here, and maybe not being in the right headspace to use the right “there” or whatever.

I can sympathize pretty deeply with both sides of those interactions.

It's easy to get fixated on a typo or error, especially if it changes the meaning of what was written.

But, that's also missing the forest for the trees and can seem especially cruel if someone's particularly vulnerable.

I think most of the time it’s pretty easy to tell what the person meant based on context. That’s not always the case, but in my experience, it typically is. If someone corrects a person as opposed to simply asking for clarification, that seems to demonstrate that they knew what meaning the writer was trying to convey.

I dislike spelling/grammar policing generally.

The point of words is communication. If you understood what somewhat wrote well enough to correct them then they already communicated effectively.

So cork it.

That's my position, anyway.

I agree, context and tone typically make it clear what was meant.

But, I also get how people's minds get easily distracted by trivial things, like grammatical errors, or a piece of fluff on an otherwise great outfit, or whatever.

Monotropism might cause autists to be more prone to noticing little details, even sometimes to the point of missing the bigger picture. It doesn't make hurting people because of a behaviour related to monotropism any better, but it does maybe give some insight into the thought process that results in it.

I know why people often do it, but it’s still a pet peeve of mine, especially in certain contexts.

It appears cruel in the context you've described, regardless of why they're doing it or whether or not they recognize the behaviour as cruel.

In other contexts it comes off as intellectually dishonest, essentially like the person is conceding they can't refute the argument so they're going to hope to distract from that by making a fuss over a typo or whatever.

Yeah, I think it’s often an online behavior because people wouldn’t typically correct someone’s grammar in a similar situation where they were being confided in offline about similar problems although I bet some still do.

Walking in the snow. It's very pretty to look at but it's a pain to walk in.

Olden days music where the lyrics just make no sense in this day and age
