I asked my mother, whether I'd be seen as nothing but the usual good for nothing riffraff to her parents (or a similar situation, no matter the context), well, not riffraff, but good for nothing disabled Daniel, as a thought experiment. I got, in about the same words:

'My god, people would have to love you; if they don't, you wouldn't want them to know you anyway, as it'd be telling of who they are rather than who you are.'

Granted, it's my mother, but it made me feel a lot better.
