If leotard is pronounced 'lee oh tarred' why isn't leopard pronounced 'lee oh parred'?

Re. the use of -tard:

I have heard fans of various tennis players (Federer, Nadal, and the like) described as -tards, as in Fedtard, Nadaltard, indicating fans of these players are impaired somehow. My understanding of the word is equivalent to a rock star groupie, someone who really doesn't care about the player/group at all, but is waiting for a backstage sexual or other favor. That's a true "-tard" to me.
