Hello Sylkat. What I meant by environment was that growing up, depending on when and where they grow up, autism is going to manifest itself completely different in a child. For instance, here in america, people my age are so ASD conscious if they have it. Their lives are governed by it. But in India, where my dad's family is from, it's a completely different story. ASD awareness has not reached even a 16th of the awareness it has here. I tell my family about these things and it goes completely over their head. Also, the culture revolves around hierarchy and family. Whereas here, we are so individuated, and hierarchy doesn't mean s**t to many people. In the Tamil Language, the language that my dad speaks, how you are addressing someone depends on their age, status, etc. If you were to tell somebody to go away, you would use a different word depending on who it was. Even the words for love are like that. Anbu, Anbe, Kadhal. Anbu is love towards your parents. Anbe is basically love your neighbor type stuff. Kadhal is the bolly-style, "I love you and I want to marry you" love. Also, in this country and throughout the western world, we sure pay a lot of attention to quirks and eccentricities these days. In India it is extremely hetero-normative, (IDK if I used that term correctly.)

LOL that was a long post....

Anyways I hope that makes sense.

Dear AngryDesi, So in India, a child's ND signs would be ignored or denied? You must have not had an easy time of it, then...was it difficult for your parents to understand your limitations? I'm assuming crowds, loud noises, typical Aspie stuff. Seems to be a terrible situation in France, the children appear to be treated like patients of mental facilities in the 1940's...there is information on it here in WP....very scary!

It goes to show there's still a terribly long way for autism awareness to go.

Hello again, everybody! I missed all of you on my busy day yesterday :(. But I am happy to be here :D.
On the subject now that Doughboy presented (I read all of the posts yesterday btw cool stuff.) the environment concept is definitely applicable to a lot of places. A lot of it has to does have to do with culture as you already mentioned, especially with the examples you mentioned with India and America. I actually did a Capstone project last year on anxiety in different cultures and I know that in Japan and Korea there is a form of abnormal psychology called Taijin-Kyofu-Sho (TKS) which is the fear of possibly offending others in social situations. Those traits end up leading to social avoidance. TKS had no direct parallel in Western classification at all, though which further illustrates those cultural differences. In Korean culture, the business world revolves highly around working with people that one is close to or that they know extremely well and is probably the main reason it is recognized in Korea.
Also, Doughboy I feel that your post does a make a lot of sense to me. I hope mine does too.

I've heard of that! They say it's because the Japanese culture focuses on social conformity more than Western cultures do. So I think the environment definitely plays a lot in this. The question is, how much nature and how much nurture?

Dear Albirea, The temperature here is 77 degrees, but we're supposed to get more rain Wednesday...we haven't dried out from our last storm!
That TKS sounds like the culture has rather absolute control over the individual's behavior. If someone is neurodiverse and happens to flap, or clap, or make a funny little noise, or walk oddly, or pace, then is that individual ostracized/shunned?
Thank God I'm in America, with all the problems we've got, some other places/countries/cultures are sounding downright scary!
