Not as slim as I used to be, but not overweight. I could benefit from some sit-ups though.
That's almost one of the most useless exercises out there. Sine it is a sister to the crunch...it takes 250.000 crunches to burn a pound of fat. I think I did 5000 crunches once (and I'm an exercise extremist/enthusiast just to give ya an idea).
Ok, I really don't know the first thing about exercise.
So, what is the best thing for a middle aged belly?
Haha, I love exercise
Well....you need overall fitness to keep the belly slim. I've found this out because sometimes I have trouble with my stomach sometimes if I'm not paying attention.
Basically, I would suggest some running if calorie burn is your issue (in that case, it'd be your all-over body that's out of shape and it is 100 calories per mile.)
If not, and you just want the stomach, then you need strong cores. NOT strong abs (because the abs are these stringy little muscles that can be worked a lot but it won't make much of a difference) but your obliques and the other muscles making up the core need to be strengthened.
Also, if you can, tone it done on the fat intake. I can't, because a lot of my protein comes with fat (vegetarian) but if you can avoid things high in fat. that should help as well.
