I've been sleeping a lot; I have a 3-day weekend and I'm bored with not much to do. I've been coughing some with a sore throat.

is the sore throat new? it could be a combo of the coughing as well as post nasal drip irritation.

Have you tried honey and lemon? gargling in salt water helps kill off the bacteria too.

I don't know whether that has already been suggested.

Even with the return of cold, dry weather my coughing and sore throat seem less today. The only issue I've had is acid incongestion which is resolved by Pepto-bismol. I guess that's good news to tell the allergist tomorrow.

^^^
do you think some of the coughing might be a result of acid reflux?

Possibly. Even when I was having the burning today, though, I wasn't coughing very much, so who knows? Maybe I do have GERD along with postnasal drip. Hopefully, with the allergist we could make sure, and also make sure to rule out asthma.

I went to the allergist today and they were at first surprised that I was on the Dulera for postinfectious cough. I had my finger pricked to check for white blood cell counts and allergies and a pulmonary function test; both came back negative, and in fact on the pulmonary my lung function was much better than predicted. The allergist says it's unlikely I have asthma and he agreed with the diagnosis of postinfectious cough, but he disagreed with prescribing more antibiotics. Instead, he said that the Dulera can be beneficial for postinfectious cough, and he gave me the 200 mcg/5 mcg version, told me to take 2 puffs twice a day for 2 weeks. We set an appointment for 2 weeks in the future, but he says if I feel better then cancel it. He told me to go off the Tussionex and that of course if I finish the Dulera and subsequently the cough returns, to come back then.

It looks like we're getting this resolved. :D

I had bronchitis every year for twenty years of my life From age 8 to age 28. Longest stretch I had it for was six months in '09. I just learned to expect it. Nothing I did prevented me getting it. Climate didn't matter. Humidity didn't matter. I have allergies, and asthma. Treating those didn't prevent me from getting it.

And then I realized I was food intolerant to a few things which were staple parts of my diet. I was constantly causing congestion in my lungs which is a thing I finally tracked down to food intolerance. With the increased congestion, I couldn't clear my lungs fast enough of the crud to prevent a nice home for bacteria and other things from moving in. Once I cut out the things that I was intolerant to and stopped the congestion, my lungs cleared and stay clear. I still get sick with a cough every now and then, but it lasts a two three days now. No more months on end bronchitis. I partake of what I'm intolerant to every now and then, but nowhere near the quantities I did when I was constantly sick with bronchitis.

the biggest offender for me was foods that acidified my blood chemistry [wheat gluten, refined carbs in general], and once I got rid of those my recurrent sinus problems/bronchitis/atypical pneumonia have abated.

Gosh darn it, I might have GERD! I failed to bring that up with the allergist, but I read this:

Quote:
When these signs and symptoms occur at least twice each week or interfere with your daily life, doctors call this GERD.

I've been having to use Pepto-bismol for heartburn symptoms at least 2 or 3 times a DAY!

It would be a pain to make it out to the doctor's tomorrow.

in the meantime, you can sleep with your upper body slanted upwards, propped up on large pillows, in addition to avoiding carbonated drinks, and foods which cause acid production within 3 hours of bed time. there are OTC acid blockers you could take in the meantime also.

I'm still on the stronger Dulera and have stopped the Municex. I've started Prilosec for acid indigestion and will see how that goes before seeing the doctor. I still have an occasional (usually productive now) cough, but have had no coughing fits for a week or so. :D Unfortunately, despite washing my mouth out after using the Dulera like I thought I should, I've still developed thrush on my tongue. I called the office today and the nurse-practitioner said to also eat something after using the Dulera. I shall see how that works.

Unfortunately, I've also noticed that I've still been fatigued a lot lately and have been sleeping a lot, which I hear is a side effect of the Dulera that you should talk to your doctor about, so I probably will need to call the office again. :?

I would ask [if I were you] for an prescription for oral clotrimazole tablets for the thrush.

auntblabby,

Too late. :p

Anyway, they said "it's not a side effect," so I can't explain my fatigue. I also seem to have more of an occasional productive cough today than before, though still no coughing fits.

I used to get thrush and it works even after an outbreak, in killing it off.
