A-24 was the land based version of the SBD Dauntless used by USAAF. The back seat could be for the rear gunner just the guns are not there at all. Make senses to me for the rear seat.

Me-262 was a okay plane however to be shot down by monoplanes is funny for a jet plane. Oh wait it also happened once with the MiG-15 against a F4U Corsair in Korea (F4U Corsair reminded in service into Korea)

The problem was that the 262 came into service late in the war. The best Lufwaffe pilots were gone by then. It was a quantum leap in piloting, and they never really got the hang of it.

The Tigers, yes. The 262 definitely, but they would have to developed it sometime around 1940 and the challenges to finding the necessary metals would still be a hurdle. The V-2 definitely. Their nuclear program however, was a bad joke. In order to conjure the possibility of it working staggers the imagination. Their basic science was flawed because they rejected "Jewish Physics". Their ability to gather the materials was non-existant. The funds necessary to push the technology wasn't there at all. Remember the Yanks spent something over a billion dollars (in 1940's currency) and committed huge amounts of resources just to get two functional bombs.

Over a billion in 1940... wow thats alot for that even if it was for the bomb... 8O

It was a huge effort, they built a processing plant in Tennessee USA (I believe) and then had to staff it with people sworn to secrecy, power it (it used as mush electricity as a town) and then process the plutonium. It's a great story, you should read up on it sometime. Of course nowadays the whole thing is non politically correct because of the guilt of using it on Japan. The first bomb was supposed to hit Berlin. THAT would make an interesting parallel history novel ! !

It was late in the war but it sparked the Jet Fighter Race between the U.S. and her allies and Soviet Union. The U.S. came out on top because of a more stable economy. I still laugh at how dumb the higher ups were in Vietnam in the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps for put in too much trust in missiles and no guns on their fighters that they forgot the basics of dog fighting. At least the Navy and Marine Corps puts the guns on along with forming TOP GUN to rebuild the basics of dog fighting in their fighter pilots. (Learned from mistakes while the Air Force took longer to do anything)

Actually, the Soviets punked the British by asking for a British jet engine. They figured it'd never work, but the Brits sent them one anyway. It became one of the Migs; the 15, I think.

And the japanese got a copy of the 262. Funny how that technology spread around the world so quickly. Also funny how rarely we get credit for having invented it.

You did with the Meteor jet plane which was a British made jet fighter. The problem was that the idea of the sweep wing was better.

Yes, that's true. The Germans got it right the first time, but we were still designing a straight wing.

Thanks JerryHatake for the FW-190 and JU-88 pictures. But I am referring to the Mistel guided munitions / parasite aircraft project. Which looks something like this:

Image

Equivalent to a semi-guided missile. The bomber component's cockpit was replaced with a shaped warhead and when the fighter was attached on top, a fly-by-wire-like system allowed the pilot to operate both planes in unison.

They were used on the east front and after the d-day landings.

actually the best help we got on fighting the ME 262 was,,, Adolf Hitler. The jet was designed to be a fighter, Hitler insisted it be made a bomber, so instead of an eagle, they got an aardvark...;)

I'm not sure it ever dropped any bombs. I think the Luftwaffe ignored Der Fuhrer's directive and stuck with the fighter design. Just shows that Hitler was no mad genius. He couldn't grasp the simple fact that the 262 could fly faster than other plane. He must have been Autistic or something ......

Wiki Link for Mistel

Hitler's doctors perscribed various drugs for him including high doses of methamphetamine. I only have to look at a few local criminal cases involving psychotic / irrational behaviour and meth-addiction before I am convinced what helped screw Hitler's mind.
