Do you know any languages other than German and English (as those are already known)?

I'm trying to pick up on some Japanese, but I'm finding it to be extremely difficult.

I LIED! I was actually doing a quick drawing of Phoenix Celestius. It was so quick, I hadn't even bothered to adjust the levels on this thing.

NOW, g'night!

Japanese....

A syllabic language will certainly provide variety. The principle itself is easy, but someone good at creating non-ambiguous symbols (and preferably one who does not have any preconceptions about existing syllabic writing) will be necessary. For simplicity's sake, one of the base languages will be alphabetic. Perhaps, that will be the Latin-based one.

*clatter clatter clunk*

There will be two starting cultures. Most likely, they will have enough differences to be classified as subspecies of each other but without barriers to interbreeding. I imagine one will be closer to the phoenix and the other will be closer to the depictions of the gryphon as a lion-bodied bird.

As for differences between the cultures, I imagine that those closer to gryphons will be more war-like because of the associations of gryphons with the concept that thinks closer to guarding and security. Those closer to the phoenix will likely be more philosophical, although differences in technology will be neglected for now.

Which subspecies seems more likely to adopt the syllabic system?

I think the phoenix, due to an increased amount of attention in syllabic cultures, will have a syllabic proto-language. The gryphons, in this case, will take the Latin-based language with an alphabet. It should not be too difficult to understand, so I will probably borrow heavily from Vulgar Latin, in which, "Vulgar," refers to usage by the common people rather than vulgarity of speech.

How will they branch off initially?

*clatter clatter clatter clunk*

There will initially be two phoenix variations, if it sounds good to you [plural]. Perhaps, I can base them on the Hellenic classical elements and have one to represent fire and the other to represent air, which will make for interesting histories and battles. The gryphons will have two variations as well, and one will be based on earth while the other will be based on water. Seeing the properties, it will be noted that the phoenices (Latin plural!) both share heat while the gryphons share coldness. Perhaps, then, the aggressive tendencies will be based on the property of moisture. The hot-dry (fire phoenix) and cold-dry (earth gryphon) will be more aggressive than the hot-wet (air phoenix) and cold-wet (water gryphon). The earth gryphon can then be seen as a stone gryphon or metal gryphon, which suits the aggression. The air phoenices will probably seem more elusive, so this fits as well. With water, its association with peace seems to be near-universal.

<Issue 2: Cultural Seeds, ends here mainly to prevent loss of work from random crashes>

[I really should stop forcing myself to think linguistically. It might become a bad habit and disadvantage someday.]

I was thinking this might have something to do with housework, hence "clean" (cleaning, how to clean anything, etc) so I was going to see what I could contribute.

Dagnabit! ;-)

I mostly hand flap because my hands sweat a lot, but OCCASIONALLY it can have stimming purposes. What I usually do when I get excited is bounce my right leg up and down with my foot. Which I did a lot when I got those birthday greetings.

Kevinjh, that is a very detailed description of language! Perhaps I should draw the different kinds of phoenixes and gryphons. You have my permission to use Phoenix Gryphons such as Phoenix Celestius in your conworld. :D
