I hate the fixation with making appliances "smart". A fridge or a toilet doesn't need to be "smart", it doesn't need wifi connectivity. It's all part of a scam to make products require subscription services in order to work properly, aka another symptom of late-stage capitalism.

They deserve to be hacked. I hear there's even a smart toothbrush that connects to the Web.

Free market gone bonkers. Simple low-tech commodities barely exist any more. Everything's got to be new, bigger, faster, brighter, and more expensive. And there's got to be an app for it. Sellers don't even care if their stuff is useful as long as their marketers can make people think it is.

Still, if it gives hackers the opportunity to remotely squirt cold water up rich people's bums without their prior knowledge or consent, that's some consolation.
