J.M. Judy in "Questionable Amusements and Worthy Substitutes," a book featuring anti-smoking dialogue which was published in 1904 by the Western Methodist Book of Concern. However, Johann Sebastian Bach was known to enjoy smoking a pipe, and wrote poetry on how doing so enhanced his relationship with God. So I suppose it's kind of up for grabs, but you'd never think so if you ever lit one up in a church.
