I will figuratively (and maybe quasi-literally) polish the first set of characters for proto-Phonic and will probably post a decently sized amount about the initial culture, language, pentatonic mode utilized, and other things in the next few hours. The main problem is that I should simply design a font (vector!) and settle the issue of the inconsistent anti-alias blurs.

As for the orthography and avian writing, I decided that reality could go take a bath in the Lethe and made it a bit simpler.

...on a critical failure on a 3d6 roll. Paths are fine, but there may be an easier way of doing this.

I would just use GIMP. The Paths tool is excellent for vector art.

EDIT: I wonder how those characters will convey meaning.

What I have so far is an analogue loosely based on birdsong:

OPENING
* (Heavily) genetically influenced "Name" song
* Personal "Name" sequence (not completely natural)
BODY (repeat as much as necessary)
* "Intention" song, general in meaning (distinct for intention of territorial guarding, mating calling, calling, &c.)
* "Action" song, something like a slime mold's nuclei except with verbs (...fly (1) eat not[fly (2)] sing (1) sing (2)... or something like that)
* "Object" song (...ones young food ones young nest wing flight... or something like that)

Things tend to start general and end specific, much like Big-Endian anything. Note that there is no definite closing, and this will be represented by the reduced number of farewells/salutations except in certain languages and dialects (because I am planning to be that detailed). It will be possible for proto-Phonic to be spoken in individual polyphony (?) in which an individual sings two songs at once to convey more specific meanings. This, of course, means that I will be studying soundfont creation at some point if only to make it easier to, "write."

Of course, proto-Phonic ended more than a bit less syllabic than I expected..

..but for now, proto-Gryphonic will likely be the new focus.

That sounds very plausible.
Meanwhile, I'll dive right in with drawing concept art of birds and phoenixes (I mean, phoenices. ) . It'll most likely be on a "sketch dump" sheet of some sort, and you can pick out which birds you'd like to use.

But you should pick them too, given that you are the artist (and administrator of the wiki), and having a species (or sub-species, for that matter) of identical individuals would be boring. Surely they can have variations in the same way C. l. familiaris can have plenty of distinct variations while remaining compatible with C. lupus and all sorts of wild dogs (and what would be better than a gallery of their progression?)?



As for apparently impossible feats such as a potential sub-species of the Phoenix (Ashen Phoenix? Deathless Phoenix? Pyre Phoenix?), maybe magic will be allowed provided that the relevant real-world features broken are specified and relatively specific (or interesting to such an extent that they must be included!). In this case, entropy is allowed to decrease without apparent compensatory increase, memory can be selectively kept, and the fire can be created through a hand-wave explanation..

In that case, I wonder if my conworld notebook of dragons can be incorporated as well.

EDIT: I will also try to create their evolutionary pasts as well.

Why not? A biosphere is composed of more than two sapient (sub?)species and generic landscape plants, and surely there are fauna and flora everywhere!

Suppose the dragons lived deep in caves, by infernal magma-bearing places, drawn to the increased temperatures necessary for a sulfur-based life-form..

I haven't put as much thought as I should have on the habitats and behaviors of my dragons. I'll take that into consideration when I'm drawing them.
