What? You are getting confused with the dish Scouse or lobscouse - which almost certainly had its origins in Norway (lapskaus). Liverpudlians are called scousers after the the local dish - which is fantastic, if it's made properly. But the Liverpool accent owes nothing at all to Norway. It's unique in England. If anything, it's most influenced by Irish. Huge waves of immigrants came over after the potato famine. Many sailed from Liverpool to the Americas. Many got to Liverpool and went no further.

According to this contributor to a Q&A column in The Guardian, not even the dish may owe much to Norway. Similar dishes with similar names are eaten all over Northern Europe. It may have come from one of the German ports. Certainly, the link between Liverpool and Hamburg is a very strong one, as any Scouser will tell you.

The nickname is said to derive from the name of the traditional dish 'lobscouse', a sort of stew, which was/is eaten round there. Compare this with the German 'Labskaus', and Welsh 'lobsgows', both approximately similar dishes.

I always thought people from the Liverpool area had a lot of Viking genes (mostly Danish) as there was a lot of Viking activity around this area in the 6th 7th and 8th centuries. Wasn't the Isle of Man a big Viking stronghold.

Do you detect anything other than a meld of Ireland meets South Lancashire in the accent?

People all over England claim Viking ancestry, mostly in some forlorn attempt at differentiating themselves from their neighbours. The truth is more prosaic and has been proven using DNA sampling. Apart from the celtic fringes - Scotland, Wales and perhaps parts of Cornwall, most of the rest of us are of Anglo-Saxon blood stock whether we like it or not. That still makes most of us firmly Northern European, just not of the horned hat variety. We are far more German than anything else.

i actually didn't realise i spoke like that until now:/. i don't think people will guess where i'm from based on my voice afterall.

also, i think people pronounce words a bit clearer when reading a list. like if i say 'water' in the flow of a sentence i often miss out the 't'

Yes, I often get asked "is mummy or daddy there?" when I get those marketing phonecalls from India. :lol:

I was often scolded by my family and told to "stop doing that baby voice" as though they think I'm faking it, but that's my real voice. I can't help it. :oops: I do have a more adult-sounding voice that appears sometimes though, but it's still the same pitch. I just have a very high-pitched voice.
