Oh man, I am glad I didn't put up a mouse in a clown outfit.

How about this?

Because threads can be derailed. Like this one has.

Quote:
Harden up people

The *whole point* of this thread existing is so that people don't have to harden up to participate.

When people go out of their way to set up a thread outside of PPR for the express purpose of avoiding the kind of atmosphere that exists in PPR, it suggests that PPR style debate is unwanted.

I like the Subtle Art of Verbal Combat, when I'm in the mood, but this is not the place for it. It's been said in PPR, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." Many of the people here have already said that they couldn't stand the heat, so they left the kitchen. Don't try to bring the kitchen to them.

Sorry for the off-topicness of this post. I'll try to get back on topic with a response to Cornflake's interesting question, although I may not get enough time until tomorrow.

People spend far more time talking about how religion isn't accepted on these forums than they actually spend trying to start threads actually discussing religious topics.

Just start one and we'll respect the boundaries!

I haven't said anything negative about theism or religion, I just take issue with what many theists say about PPR. Personally I don't feel any "heat" since there is no real religious debate or anything going on, I was engaging in a meta-discussion about the PPR of sorts... Fnord's theistic beliefs preclude organized religion so he elaborated on that a little (I think)... I don't think the thread is derailed at all, I think the presence of Fnord and I simply offends you  I said "harden up" because I haven't been promoting atheism or bashing religion yet a few of you are acting like it and getting all defensive, which I think is unnecessary, irrational and missing the point

Surely that would involve a change in perception or understanding rather than a hardening of anything? How does 'hardening up' help? That doesn't seem rational.

How people view a situation is not an effect of toughness or lack of it, afaik

Or, you might consider that how one perceives the world is tied into how one's nervous system (neurology) is wired?

The only way I can 'harden up' is to use drugs or alcohol in order to damp down my own sensory hypersensitivity.

I imagine that many of us here have this kind of issue to deal with in our lives. And I think given the context (i.e. we're all ostensibly slightly or more autistic than average) that telling people to 'harden up' is likely to come across in an offensive way.

You don't seem to care about other people's feelings.

That is an interesting post Moog. It got me thinking and I've created a thread in PPR related to it, if anyone would care to weigh in with their thoughts: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp4389042.html#4389042

Is that so? I happen to consider other people's feelings very important. I haven't insulted anybody or said anything other than what amounts to constructive advice which is more than can be said for some people in this thread who certainly are not getting picked at

Harden up is just an expression. I didn't actually say anything that I think one should be offended by unless they have a problem with me to begin with. When a bunch of people start acting like one is saying something they aren't or even telling them to "go eff themself" I think its a pretty appropriate response. I don't think "sensory hypersensitivity" has anything to do with it

Tell that to AG since all I did was laugh at his joke

I genuinely really like pretty much everyone on this forum so it actually causes me some distress when people say I hate them because of their beliefs and treat me accordingly

If this quote above isn't being offensive, then I've probably lost the meaning of the word "offence". And there are many other examples there in the PPR forum. Anyone can see it. It's just a matter of taking a look at the several threads involving religion, faith, etc. That's the kind of thing I called "not to debate respectfully". This sort of thing annoys me and makes me feel bad — not because atheists were questioning my concepts (for I'm pretty sure and secure about my 'beliefs'), but because I don't like to be provoked (and that is provoking somehow) and, yes, offended.

And, important to say, I don't have anything against you or other atheists, Vigilans. Actually I took part in some 'debates' with atheists before coming to WP, and a few of them could debate with respect, with no provocations, no offensive remarks. Unfortunatelly most of you seem not to be able to argue respectfully; it's just as if you're in need to 'attack' religion (therefore, religious people), and that, moreover, is a very curious and weird behaviour.

Obs.: By laughing at his joke, you were agreeing with it. It's just the same thing.

I've said it to you, because you're the one engaging with us in this thread, and saying that PPR isn't as bad as we make out.

You laughed at a joke, that was at the expense of someone else.
It took me less than 2 minutes from thinking I'll look in PPR today, seeing a thread that took my fancy, opening it, to feeling crap.

I don't think you hate us at all. That's not the issue here Vig.
