Lots of people losing jobs and being made redundant… including me ten years ago. Happens all the time and never makes the news.

Yep.

I came across this article about Anne: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-62895373
Definitely the family trooper.

Yes, Harry's attempt was a bit of a wet flannel, really - no snarl.

That was unbelievably insensitive timing and a PR disaster.
I think some may have realised that their jobs supporting the Prince of Wales (as he was) would likely vanish as he became king, and William will already have his own staff - but still.
Really cold and heartless, and some of them had worked there for decades.

I'm actually a little confused by this. Shouldn't they now be serving the family of the new Prince of Wales (I am speaking of William, Kate and their menagerie of course). or does William have his own slaves?

Why?

I live in Yorkshire.

I was born in Cheshire, but I still believe that Richard III was our last great king.

Aha, I see! I thought you meant 'around here' as in 'on Wrong Planet.' Not 'in your household'

Richard III was certainly a very brave king. Especially going into war with such a disability.

You'd think so wouldn't you! Terrible timing as well. Getting sacked as they were helping King Charles get ready for the funeral of his mother and doing his kingly duties.

The only thing I can think is that the king wants to slim down the vast number of employees and royals who have to be paid and maintained.

But still it is VERY insensitive. Boo, hiss!

To be honest, the timing of these job losses is quite remarkable… and insensitive. U-turns seem to be the order of the day, still time for a re-think.

They're employed by the office, not the holder of it - so as Charles, Prince of Wales ceased to exist as the Queen died, by becoming the King, so did his office.

There will be similar changes now William is Prince of Wales: his office will likely take on additional staff for that and probably lose a few in the process. It only seems right, and sensible, that they should take on as many as possible who had worked under the previous incumbent.

Horrible timing.Laying people during a memorial service.
Maybe they got huge severance pay checks and a new position , but the timing was just tacky.

The letter about the redundancies from Sir Clive Alderton, the King’s top aide, apparently said: "Staff who are made redundant are expected to be offered searches for alternative employment across all royal households, assistance in finding new jobs externally and an “enhanced” redundancy payment beyond the statutory minimum."

See https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/202 ... -for-queen - posted earlier by KitLily.

Yes, U turns are what the government does all the time so maybe the royal family now do the same! *sigh*

Every time I hear "King Charles III" I'm still thinking a breed of dog. :?

I'm left wondering how much longer it will be before the BBC (especially) starts saying "King Charles" or just "The King" - instead of drumming it into us that he's "King Charles III".
Yes, we know he's #3...

Sounds awfully like a restructure. So the poor sods have to re-apply and have no guarantee of re-employment.

There are certain quirks that Charles demands which will be difficult to service, For example (and this is true) Charles demands the servants cook a number of eggs in the morning at 10 different temperatures and each morning depending on his mood he will choose 2 and throw the other eggs. So in addition to be being spoilt and demanding, the new monarch doesn't live up to reputation of being environmentally conscious throwing food every morning into the bin. I thought Andrew would be difficult to service.

I imagine the servants also have to select which of his wine collection to use to fuel his biodiesel jaguar. Lots of retraining.

^ That seems somewhat unlikely. A Murdoch-based source, maybe? :chin:
