Oh, and a bottle of a newly-released cider I bought from the food shop there. It's a 6.2% still medium dry cider produced using real Lancashire apples in the heart of the Ribble Valley (not too far from me, as it happens). It's apparently best served chilled so it's not a scrumpy or anything of that nature:

That reminds me of a nice Soviet-era "Volga" I saw in Ukraine - notice the terrible fitment on the hood (bonnet) and doors - they came from the factory that way(!)

Soviet citizens didn't have the luxury of shopping around for a better one - you got what you got...

Yes, I went last November and enjoyed it very much. It is very much like Russia without the edge: Visa-free travel and the police don't seem to harrass western tourists for bribes nearly as often (practically a daily occurance in Russia). The hotels are also an excellent value - I had a two-floor suite in Odessa for less than half of what I paid for a tiny room in New York city a couple of weeks ago.

Unbelievably tragic history though - the got the worst of WWII (in both directions), Stalin's genocide in the 30's (which is why no one in Ukraine apparently speaks Ukrainian), the holocaust (eg the Babi Yar massacre), Chernobyl, etc...

I intend to go back and tour the Crimean peninsula and Chernobyl in the not-too-distant future.

What were the locals like? When I was in Poland they seemed distant and decidedly unfriendly, most of the time. Not a nice place. Krakow was alright but the rest of the bits we saw, I'd be happy if I never saw again. Half the roads were still there from when Hitler was there.

Grisha: Word to the wise, mate. Can you get yourself a Flickr account? It's only £15 a year and you can have your photos searchable and you can link to them here to the hi-res copy. Much better, mate. You seem to have more than 200 photos on there so if you take a lot of photos it's worth the cost.

The locals were extremely nice in most cases, friendly and tolerant of my horrible Russian. They seemed to be much more friendly towards Americans than they are in Russia. Of course I only saw the more affluent parts of Kiev and Odessa, so maybe that distorted my perception somewhat...
