Of course, the nightmare was getting the GNOME screensaver to stop blocking the xscreensaver daemon.

Back to the no-swear zone!

It's so comforting in here...

Kevinjh, I'm a Ubuntu user! :)

But I can't join in your interesting discussion because my (lack of) limited knowledge of how to (mis) use it prevents me.

I am a noob... Still, I take comfort in the thought that I'm a lot safer now than I was with W****ws.

:o In rage and frustration, all I did was uninstall GNOME screensaver and install the xscreensaver. This has the unfortunate side-effect of disabling the lock screen function on the GNOME panel and requiring the xscreensaver control panel to be started manually every time a lock (Blank screen now or something of that sort) is desired. Of course, it does include many wonderful screensavers (some of which would be better as passive entertainment displays due to the amount of 3-D graphics involved) depicting various things like Moebius strips with ants traveling on their surfaces, Klein bottles, molecules included in the package and manually downloaded from the PDB, fractal formations and terrains, a 2-D demonstration of Maxwell's demon, an assortment of CSOD's (Colored Screens of Death), flying toasters, bouncing cows, and fiber lamps among many other things.

Aww. But then again, :thumleft:

I'm making a papercraft model of the Portal radio. I AM TOO OBSESSED.

It will only be too obsessed after you make one of those mini-record players with the mini-records made from hard plastic that often come in children's toys or otherwise make it play the music.

I'm not skilled enough to make that yet. But if I could... believe me, I would. 8O

Predicted materials:
- Easily hardened clay
- Needle substitute
- Knowledge of how the grooves on records work
- Paper cone of amplification
- Motor with battery

I can see how studying, posting on WP, and making papercrafts at the same time cannot work out well. :(

Maybe it could be a summer project.

Remember those metal drums in music boxes and mobiles for babies? Maybe the admission tube could be used for a rendition of one of the songs (but it would have to be fed in a helical pattern, just like a screw, because the length of the track probably matters more than having a high pitch range).

Maybe. I'm still thinking about turning it into a Portal gun, though.

Things to do during the summer:
- Make Portal gun.
- Finish papercraft of Portal radio.
- Make more papercraft.
- Study more physics. (Wha-aaa...?)
- Read all the books on my impossibly long list.
- Take singing lessons.
- Learn a movement of a piano concerto.
- Practice for MITSO audition.
- Another East Coast road trip.
- ...

So little time!
