the reason "vegemite" has failed to impress many citizens of other countries is because they have no idea about the strength of the taste, and i am appalled at the lack of education the ambassadors for vegemite provide concerning it's application.
I had never heard of vegemite prior to the popularity in the U.S. of the song
Down Under by Men At Work. In the 80's, they were the ambassadors for vegemite to those of us in the U.S. The song contains the lyrics "he just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich". After that song became popular, vegemite started popping up in the international sections of some large grocery stores. I guess people started asking for it after hearing the song.
I had no idea about the strength of its' taste. Like so many Americans, I bought vegemite and made a sandwich with it, just as the song described. The problem is that I made a really
thick sandwich. I spread it on the bread as though it were peanut butter. The taste was so horrifying that I spit it out, threw away the jar, and haven't eaten it since.
That's what I get for learning about new cuisine from song lyrics.
