My mom has an electric typewriter, we would play on it from time to time. I never understood what made it better than a manual...does it just type a little bit easier? I just remember it made this humming noise the whole time, and she didn't appreciate it very much when we would jam up all of the keys at the same time.

my memory of the IBM Selectric [the kind with the ball of type] is that it was far easier to rapidly "touch type" with the thing, a lot harder task with an old-fashioned long-throw manual model.
