Once a type is discovered it gets easier, because every fake
will have the same die-marks or cast marks. We see alot! of
old, 1800-1900, coins here these days 8O i actually saw news
on a local site today about a fake one on ebay, And one on a
local auction site here 8O they have singled out some types
and made up alot of those it seems, and they sell for around
$700-800 for each piece 8O

One trick to find fakes, is checking the metal, often the mix of
metals are off or wrong metals. To do this without damaging the
coin theres someting called a "specific gravity scale".

Easily said, it states the relationship between the weight of an object
and the equivalent weight of water of the same volume. Every metal
has its density and weight so those scales find the weight of each
type of metal in the coin, and then how much of it thats there in % :D
how great is that, no more costly lab examinations (or sometimes one
might need that anyway, but it helps alot!) they cost around $450 and up
here

edit---
i just checked, the fake one on ebays has been removed :D
wow that was fast, impressive
..but theres another guy that have sold three fakes in two
weeks and he has the fourth out now :x he will probably
be stopped by ebay soon, people are complaining to them

Counterfits have always been a serious thing, a guy was hanged
here in the 1910`s for forgery of coins, thats not so long ago 8O
it can really mess up a countrys economy and then the whole
country if someone releizes lots of fakes into circulation

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

Specific gravity, never thought about that being applied to coins. On my job as a diesetter, I had to check specific gravity, or density(as we called it), many times a day. We used it to determine that our product was up to customer specs, so I am very familiar with that process. It's cool to know that it actually has a use, outside of industry. :)

NO WAY!! !

It is totally unrelated to fabrics, its a type of rubber. its thick and warm and tight and rubbery :D

Its a little 8) yes - i dont have one myself, but planning on
getting one some time soon, eeger to test it and check it out.
As i understand the older types had scale-arms and water and
a tray you lowered into the water, but the new ones are tip-top
as i understand, userfriendly. Sounds like you know all there is
to know about it thru your job, very 8)

Specific gravity/density:

First you need the dry weight, then you need the weight of the item submersed in water. Subtract the wet weight from the dry weight, and that will leave you the difference. Divide your dry weight, by that difference, and you will have the specific gravity(density).

Nowdays you can purchase scales that do all the calculations for you, but they are kind of expensive.

""""Nowdays you can purchase scales that do all the calculations for you"""

über 8) and sweet

cheapest i`ve seen her was around $300 but i gladly
pay extra for quality instead of buying it twice so
have looked at some of the better models.

And i have a sneaking suspicion that those scales cost
alot less where you are, maybe - pretty much all other
electronic equp. over there is cheaper then here. But its
a little "special" equipment those scales so might cost about
the same

^Not sure about our prices. All I know is, my employer was always reminding us that the scales were expensive to replace, if we damaged them.
