I remember being really surprised when I learnt that most sitcoms are actually filmed in front of live studio audiences. I remember thinking ... does this mean that if one scene requires five takes, the audience are expected to laugh each and every time they see the joke?

It is because they think we are (or many people really are) morons and will act like Pavlov's dog.

The characters are on a boat in a lake and you hear laughter? Gimmee a break.

Hollywood and the advertising world are built on the theory that you can never underestimate the stupidity of the average man.

Ok, well half the population has, by definition, a below average intelligence.

This is true. I saw a jester at a renaissance festival once, and I remember thinking that we wouldn't all be laughing so much if we had instead only seen him on television.

Maybe it's the whole intimacy thing...being right there, being part of it, you're more inclined to have an emotional response.
