Some people have busy lives and/or public transport isn't adequate. Some people don't and/or it is.

i have an 80 mile round trip for school 5 days a week, and church on sat and sunday is 60 mile round trip.

you talk about walking and being able to reflexionate (I like that word!). I can do that while I'm driving! granted I'm not solely absorbed into my own world although I would very much love to be!
PLus working on cars is one of the very very few things my dad and I have together, so I do that as much as I can, cause I love my dad!

Where I live a car is almost essential, crappy public transport and a spread out city makes a car much more relevant.

Even if things were better I still would drive, I vastly prefer the freedom to go anywhere at anytime without relying on anyone or anything. That I think is the major benefit of owning a car. I still walk heaps, but if its going to take 1 hr to walk, then the car takes the win.

I also love cars, its my obsession. Fixing, fiddling, modifying, and driving is one of my things. Kinda makes the question a moot point for me :)

Don't be afraid of driving, once you master the skills you will wonder how you managed without.

Well for one, I really like driving. I think of my car as my own personal space, like my room at home, so I'd rather be in it than out. Two, I wouldnt wanna be walking anywhere during the summer here in Aust. It's simply too boiling hot most days. In the car with the AC on is the way to go.

I live in the suburbs. I use public transit to get to and from work, but outside Monday-Friday, 9-5, public transit becomes more difficult to access. Having a car to take to the Park & Ride, grocery shopping, etc. is pretty much essential.

Cabs would provide no environmental savings and would simply blow the budget out of the water. Car sharing (we belong to a car co-op for our second car) is a great compromise.
