Don't let them tell you what you can and can't do. I walk around in public dressed as a Jedi/Sith because I like to do it, and my parents don't stop me. I've done it in public before, far after halloween. But this is usually because I troop. Everybody is allowed to do what they like to do as long as they don't harm anyone. People who like football wear football shirts aren't criticized or thought of as mental. Neither are football players, or card sharks, swimmers, fencers. Why should Star Wars cosplayers of fursuiters, or anyone else that cosplays in general be judged any different? Sure it's not normal, sure it's childish, but it's an activity some people like to partake in, so who has the right to judge anyone about it?

Mrowf, think this applies to me too, and what a first post *rolls eyes*
I'm a littlefur and have 2 fursonas, an arctic fox and a blue wolf, I originally watched the fandom as an outsider artist looking to make some extra cash but soon found myself hooked on my new found social life as I started attending meets. I appreciate a lot of you don't like the more sexual aspects of the fandom and honestly I wish we weren't stereotyped as yiff fiends. Whilst I don't have a personal interest in yiff art I can still view it for it's artistic merit, and will happily draw it because I have no standards and I like the cash. I know, I'm going to hell
Having asked around on the few furry forums I frequent as part of my own research into my AS the fandom is quite highly populated with us it would seem. I think AS lends itself to the fandom (or is it the other way round?) as furries are generally, and please don't take this the wrong way my fluffy friends, really anti-social. With exception of a specifically technological convention, nowhere else have I seen people travel from across the country only to sit next to each other and continue talking over instant messengers, IRC and SecondLife, we truly are mad, but who's complaining
PunkyKat: Embrace your weirdness and relish in how uncomfortable you'll make everyone else feel
I live in a really middle-class town and nothing upsets the boring flow of normality like me striding down the high street with my blue bushy tail and collar. I got passed caring what anybody else thought at 14 and chose to be myself regardless of who liked it. I have several friends outside the fandom who don't consider me a freak for being a furry, as for anyone else it ain't as if there gonna see me again, and if I wear my masks nobody knows it's me anyway
Nice meeting you all and I guess I'll see you around the boards ![]()

Welcome to WP Wofl
Yeah, I notice a lot of furries are aspies. It seems many nerds in general that are part of any fandom like this are aspies or at least exhibit aspie qualities. Be it Trekkies, DnD fans, medievil larpers, etc.
I have no problems with people drawing or looking at yiff, it's just that yiff is so widespread in some people feel the need to post it everwhere. Yiff needs to carry some sort of age restriction on art sharing sites. The first time I looked up furry on the internet, I had to use eye bleach because of d*mn google images. So for anyone who takes an interest in learning about the fandom, go directly to wikipedia and go from there unless you want to vomit on the keyboard.

I agree wholeheartedly there Shen, I only use one furry art site FurAffinity and yiff there is usually properly tagged as mature and unavailable to people who haven't registered and ticked a box saying they would like to see it. Once that box is ticked the fault of opening the image is down to the user as they've accepted they are 'willing' to see all the lovely detail. I haven't posted much yiff there as I prefer to send it in private and leave the commissioner to choose how and where to post it. The few images I have posted I have always provided a custom thumbnail with no image showing just a text description of what you can expect to find when you click that way it's all spelled out and the decision again is down to the user.

I'm not a furry but I do like some of the art, the clean stuff though not yiff.
I was curious about it last year and joined furaffinity and drew a few catgirls but more cat looking than human looking though. But then I lost interest.

That's the way it should be done. The abundance of yiff open for everyone to see is why the fandom gets a bad name. You know, if it weren't for how widespread yiff is among the community, I would consider joining the fandom despite not being totally obsessed with anthros. The yiff is what keeps me away. That and the negative connotations that have arisen among the internet community. Being a furry garauntees you will be scrutinized. Their's also the percieved overzealous nature of furries when they or their fandom is criticized. Like on youtube, some go to great lengths and just feed the trolls more and more, and this starts with a little provocation. I cringe when these types of furries relate the whole fursecution thing to the holocaust. Smart furries keep out and remain apathetic. Dumb furries go on ahead and further paint the fandom in a negative light.

Totally. Some fail to realise that as fun and normal as it may be to us, to the rest of the world we are completely weird beyond definition. I know it and accept it, why the heck would anyone even attempt to pass off dressing up as a 6ft plushie as normality? Perfect example of what you've said with ChewFox on the Tyra Banks show, as much of complete ret*ds she and her partner were by even thinking of going on such a popular show with that, the aftermath of hundreds of furs moaning about it on forums and youtube was just unbelievable and made it 10 times worse. It was never suggested that we were all as ChewFox and co are, we don't all use our suits to get off with each other, it could have been made a little clearer on the show that these are a minority but by defending it so virulently it just opened the flood gates to more doubt and criticism. The whole subculture needs to get over itself and just be proud to be different, as we'll certainly never be anything but.

Yeah yeah... I'll admit it...
I'm a furry as well.
Hah! You managed to make me crawl out of my den... been lurking there for a while now... *waggles*
Anyway, although I consider myself a furry, I haven't been active in the fandom since '96. To make a long story short, I was the only active furry online in my entire country at that time. That makes you feel rather lonely! Furthermore, while I at first thought I had found the place for me to be, I eventually became disillusioned with the whole affair. Not only did the cracks in the fandom become painfully obvious to me as the initial excitement turned into everyday business, I also realized that it was turning me into something I was not. I was a hopeless romantic when I joined and left as a bitter heartbroken yiffmeister. Still, I learned a lot about myself and treasure the good things I experienced while being in the fandom. I still enjoy looking at some of the softer furry porn. You know, the stuff that leaves something for ye olde imagination to work with.
I've often wondered if leaving the fandom was the right decision I made back then. I'm absolutely sure my life would have been very different today if I hadn't. But for better or worse, I honestly cannot say. Maybe I would have gotten over things or somehow solved them. Dunno. Since then, I've on occasion checked up on how the fandom is doing in my country. Seems like there are quite a few furries out there now (very few had access to the net where I live back then), but they all seem so young compared to a grumpy old wolf like me. I'm just not sure if I would fit in and I've become a hell of a lot less social over the years. So I just wander the digital forest all by myself at night and howl at the lonely sprite in the sky which they call the moon. On a more positive note, I still get to roleplay furry characters in MMOs, so it's not all bad
Well, I suppose that's it...

I heard about that somewhere. She went on and basically doomed the fandom further. In general, the public image of furries is negative and it's gotten worse and worse over the years. Like I said, the first time I heard about furries was when I watched the one entourage episode.

Nice to meet you *woofs'n'wags*
Have met a few furs from Denmark the past 2 years at Eurofurence in Germany. There's a pink fox girl called Pinky who was organising Denmarks first convention this year however it's been called off which is a real shame. She will undoubtedly try again in a year or so though, think the domain was www.eufuria.org

I'm a furry, too.
Okay. Enough about that. LOL I'm not going to say what furry is. You all did a nice enough job in your posts so you don't need my opinion of what it is.
*goes back to reading her book she is almost finally done with *yayy**
