I'm not into weddings. Haven't been to one since I was a kid and not planning on going to any again. Unless I end up having one myself :eew:

Why would you spend £20,000 (or thereabouts) on a wedding day? It seems like a huge waste of money to me

Because people are illogical and easy to screw out of a lot money?

A fool and his money are easily parted as the old saying goes.

I always wonder why celebrities spend so much money on their weddings when they are going to divorce anyways later.

Because celebrities get so much publicity from doing so that they actually make a profit.

My husband and I spent about £2,000 on our wedding and that included dinner and drinks for everyone. But then we didn't have a cake, DJ, bridesmaids etc and we had the reception in a pub. It was still the best day of our lives and I think all our guests genuinely enjoyed it too, because we didn't put any pressure on anyone to dress up and we didn't let anyone buy us wedding gifts.

I guess how much you spend depends on how much importance you place on the day itself. I never dreamed of a white wedding and I didn't care about the dress. If those things are important though, they do cost A LOT of money (as soon as anyone realises you're using their services for a wedding they'll try and hike their prices up).

That sounds like it would have been a really cool time. Cheers to you and your hubby.

i never want to get married, but i have always wanted to get divorced, and since my aversion to marriage is equal to my desire for divorce, then i guess i will remain indefinitely seized in ambivalence about the matter.

well, i don't know the actual stats at all, but every person in my acquaintance who went for the big expensive wedding got divorced. not as many of the people with cheap weddings got divorced. in retrospect, i wonder if the big spenders were overcompensating for the insecurity of the relationship?

my wedding cost less than $500. i wouldn't have bothered with a ceremony at all but people wanted to buy us presents. we were dirt poor and living in the projects, and we just had a baby, so my in-laws wanted to help us get some household stuff.

I have no idea how much my wedding cost, though I did see the bill for the flowers. Holy moly. I think it's just expensive and parents want to invite the whole extended family. It's like a fancy family reunion. Ultimately you have to hire all kinds of people to do things if you want a certain kind of party. My mother-in-law got caterers with waiters, a florist, redecorated (we got married in their house) and landscape people. I'm sure she did all kinds of other things, too, that I never knew about. I just showed up.

It made her very happy to welcome everyone into her home and be extremely hospitable.
