Linking the two posts above me together; John Oates would be a really amusing pornstar name.

Tom Waits was born in Pomona, CA... the town where I grew up. Of course he had the sense to move away.

My little village is too small to produce anyone of notice, but there is a little town just over the next hill (some 2km from where I live) that is called Engelskirchen. It's named after the Engels family that used to be the most prominent family in that town. They used to produce wool and cloth and their factory provided work for a lot of people in Engelskirchen.
The most famous person from Engelskirchen is probably Friedrich Engels, the son of the man who established that wool factory. Friedrich Engels helped Karl Marx figure out many of the ideas that he wrote down in his Communist Manifesto.

Linda Ronstadt. Her family goes back several generations here. They were quite prominent. Her father owned the biggest hardware store in the city for many years.

My little hometown Village is the birthplace of professional football (the American kind). Not of the game, but of the concept of having pro football players. Jim Thorpe played on their team, though he wasn't from there.
The bigger town nearby (where everybody went to get groceries) is the hometown of Axl Rose and Shannon Hoon.

I think Mary Somerville was supposed to have lived in my town for a number of years.
It's a small place, unfortunately.

On a happier note, the frontman from Jethro Tull was born just up the road. :P

As a college town, Gainesville has (or had) some famous residents, but not always for good reasons. These include
-Tom Petty (musician)
-Tim Tebow (famous for obvious reasons)
-Andrew Meyer (the "Don't Tase Me Bro" guy)
-Terry Jones (the crazy pastor who threatened to burn Korans)

Growing up, I lived in a small town of around 1500 people that was once home to Peter Jackson, director of Lord of the Rings. I believe that I may have been to the same school that he went to.
