One of the earliest signs of AS that I displayed as a kid in the 70's was that as soon as I got my hands on my parents' Melways, I almost completely memorised it. In fact to this day they never let me forget it!

Even though I don't even drive anymore, I always keep up to date with the latest edition because I love to see the changes with each one. I also collect old street directories of Melbourne; Melways dating back to the early 70's as well as pre-Melway road maps from the 50's and 60's. They can be hard to make sense of though,
as Melway pretty much pioneered the degree of detail you mentioned, as well as any standard of accuracy in urban cartography in Australia. This is why they've taken off so well in Sydney, and now Brisbane, where Brisway was launched this year.
