I don't think I'd care all that much. But it does help to find out who is a troll and who isn't. Trolls rarely get above a small post count, and if you can tell how many posts a person has in combination with what their attitude is, it helps to prevent feeding them. I also think post counts make regular/prolific users identifiable to new people if they have questions about the community and don't want to bother the administration
I don't think it helps at all, really. All it does is show who posts more. From there, people make assumption about the posters.
Example;
"That poster has been here a long time and has only made X posts. They're probably a troll."
or...
"That poster hasn't been here long but has XXXXX post count. They must be desperate for attention and/or have no life."
I can think of a few scenarios where these assumptions would be very wrong. (and yes, I chose them for a reason...

)
Personally I don't like to make assumptions on people based on post count, I don't even really check tbh. But if a user behaves very badly and are brand new, I try and give them the benefit of the doubt, unless they are clearly trolling. I was just thinking of reasons why it [post count] could sometimes serves as a benefit. If someone has been here for a long time and made few posts, I would actually think they were likely not a troll and more or less just a less frequent poster. If someone joined 3 days ago, posted 20 times, and all of the posts were suspicious/insidious in nature, then you might have reason to assume they are a troll. Plus there are people who are proud of their post count, no doubt, and I think overall it is harmless and would probably upset them to lose it. Maybe someone should make a poll to see if there is actually a lot of people interested in removing it. But I think almost all the forums I've been to have post counts and I've honestly never heard people complain about the concept before this
