I think of it as more of a general announcement, like "Okay, thieves, someone is watching, so don't try nothin'."

Or maybe it's an incantation...

One person doing that job would get paid thousands of pounds a year. Multiple people would cost lots.

the personnel will just steal from it then. happens all the time with the T&A.

I would never ask a stranger to keep my stuff safe. The one time someone asked me to watch her stuff, she went to the bathroom and took so long that I just left it there. Not my problem. I had to get going.
