if they do not respond with enthusiasm, then if the manager can not explain why i can not obtain what i asked for within the time i expect it to be served, then i hold my breath as i walk out and find another fish and chip shop. it does not happen often.

This type of humour is already quite dated though. Regional and race based humour is not something you often see nowadays.

I think a lot of the reason I like it is because of nostalgia. Regional differences are becoming a thing of the past already, we are becoming more homogenised, globalised. I like the differences between Yorkshire and Lancashire, and even within Lancashire and Yorkshire, between the north and the south. It's a shame in many ways that we are losing them.

Also, the humour of the 80s and 90s wasn't as sharp, as cruel, as derogatory as some of the humour now. I know it had racism, sexism, and so on, but so much of the humour now seems to be about putting people down, cruelty for its own sake.

The targets have moved on but if you ask me some of the targets nowadays are given even nastier treatment. All that's changed is that the targets are different.

Don't get me wrong, I would never wish to ban any comedian from spouting, no matter how 'offensive' he is. I am just well within my rights not to spend any time listening to or watching him, or buying his memorabilia.

The likes of Bernard Manning versus an idiot like Frankie Boyle, for example?

Yeah. I can't stand Frankie Boyle. Bernard Manning was offensive, but Frankie Boyle is a whole new ball game. Both of them target the more vulnerable members of society though. Easy targets. Racial minorities, disabled folk.

But I'd say there's a greater number of comedians today doing nasty humour than there was back then. Even the mother in law type jokes were done with a certain level of affection or good nature back then. Now, people just seem to love to find a way of making others feel small. Belittling people. Vicious stuff. And more acceptable every day it seems.
