Look in a good bookshop, or at Project Gutenberg, under "Don Quixote" by Cervantes.
In summary, he is an old man who became so obsessed with stories involved with knights and chivalry, he went mad and started thinking he was a knight. Unfortunately, when he starts trying to knightly things, the nature of the world conspires against him. The charging at windmills is just the most famous incident, although he attacks some monks escorting a woman, thinking they have captured her, and frees some criminals condemned to be galley slaves, only to be set upon by them when he orders them to pay homage to his lady, Dulcinea (who is unaware of his deeds, as far as I know).
