I tried to erase swastika from the poll this morning, but I couldn't.

I also think that those are all very nice symbols. We should use our favourite symbols for avatars on International Symbol Day, if there's such a thing.

Dear Keira, What a beautiful thing to share! Thank you! :D Mick, don't worry about 'swastika' being on the list. Sylkat

Not just ancient times. A swastika with the top open to the left symbolizes natural order. A swastika with the top open to the the right indicates change. Technically (very), a Nazi swastika be only top open to the right and black due to symbolic purposes regarding such change in Germany. Only one such symbol is 'inherently evil,' again technically. The symbol was everywhere over the world.

The swastika should get one of those Tosh.O. Web Redemption clips. It is not wrong I think to include it, and it should not be an embarrassing mistake to include it.

A symbol my Druid Order, Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD) uses is Awen. I provided a link to the Awen Wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awen and also one of The Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids. http://www.druidry.org/

Sylkat, I have a book on the Book of Kells art somewhere. It's beautiful and fascinating. If you would like to see more illuminated manuscript type art, this website/web-blog, "Bibliodyssey" is loaded with it - http://bibliodyssey.blogspot.com/ I can get lost in it for days and days. :)

What symbol do you like the most, and why?

My favourite is the Peace Sign, because I have dreams of a peaceful world without conflict where everybody gets along. Though I'm not a hippie, I do have the spirit of one.
:flower:
The Peace Sign is a great symbol and I have a necklace of one myself. 8)

I also like this symbol as well. Image

Yep.

It's a stretch for thread, but Cockney knows music.

They caught my attention when I bought into their music as a teenager.

The 'meaning' is personal to the 4 members of Zep, nothing universal.

The cross is my favorite because I'm a Christian.

I also like the skull-and-crossbones because of my love for Pirates of the Caribbean. I have a pink fleece blanket that's covered in colorful skull-and-crossbones. :)

The bhavachakra, or wheel of life, from Buddhism.

Image

Quote:
The wheel itself is a circle, symbolising the endless cycle of existence and suffering.
In the middle of the Wheel are the Three Fires of greed, ignorance and hatred, represented by a rooster, a pig and a snake. These are the cause of all suffering and are shown linked together, biting each other's tails, reinforcing each other.
In the next circle out, souls are shown ascending and descending according to their karma.
The next ring out is composed of six segments showing the six realms: gods, humans and Titans above and hungry ghosts, animals and those tortured in hell below.
The outer ring shows twelve segments called nidanas, illustrating the Buddhist teaching of dependent origination, the chain of causes of suffering (explained in the following section).
The wheel is held by Yama, the Lord of Death, who symbolises the impermanence of everything. The beings he holds are trapped in eternal suffering by their ignorance of the nature of the universe.

It's usually shown in a more simple wheel form, like a ship's wheel.

The Dove carrying an olive branch.
The olive branch has been used as a symbol of peace since ancient Greece and Rome. It was associated with the Greek goddess of peace, Eirene or with the Roman goddess Pax. The dove as a symbol of peace comes in with the Christians, who used it as a symbol of baptism, bringing God's peace to the person being baptised.

Sorry it's a bit big.
