To those who asked, I haven't found anything like star fish, sea glass (other than the nasty broken beer bottles left by inconsiderate people), or sea sponges. I've seen a few broken sand dollars but I'm hoping some day I can find a whole one, that would be pretty cool to add to my collection, and if I found a whole star fish that would be cool too. :D

I found the sea stars/star fish, sea urchins and sponges and other things like that under the water while I was diving and not on the beach. I can't remember seeing any of them on the beaches I have been to. Sand dollars are really cool and I hope you find one of some intact while you are out beach combing.

And thank you everyone who complemented me on my collection. :) I have to confess that not all of those shells were actually found by me, most of them like the little ones were found by me but some of the big ones belonged to my grandfather and he gave them to me. They were found at the same beach where I got the other shells though. We mostly go to a beach called Johnson's Beach which is full of white clean sand and pretty shells scattered around, and they even have a nature trail nearby where you can walk on this boardwalk and look at the marsh and sand dunes nearby. There's another beach we go to that's near an old abandon fort called Fort Pickens (I forget the name of the beach) and they have pretty much the same kind of shells.

That's so sweet your grandfather gave them to you. I imagine that makes them even more special. :)

I've really only been able to find mollusks because the other shells like conch shells always seem to be broken, but it would be nice if I found some in good condition. :nemo:

The conch shells are probably going to be more difficult to find in one piece on the beach. Plus, people really go for them because they're so cool. But I wish you the best of luck in finding one undamaged or chipped. You never know, someday you just might find one (or some)... just sitting there on the beach waiting for you to pick it up. :)

Thank you for the very nice replies. :)

To be honest I'm kind of scared to go out too far into the ocean. Every now and then you hear about a person getting attacked by a shark or swept out to sea by the waves and it makes me kind of nervous, so I stay pretty close to the sand to look for my shells. I remember one time I found a small live starfish in the water and my Mom suggested I take it home and kill it with bleach so I could keep the body but I couldn't bring myself to do that so I just let it go back in the water.

BTW out of all those shells I have I think my favorites are the butterfly clams. They're these tiny trianglur-like shells that are white on the outside but sometimes on the inside of the shell they can have pretty colors like purple and pink. Most of them are so tiny that I don't keep them because they break easily but I've found quite a few good sized ones that I have kept like in the picture (you can't see the colors because they're on the bottom side of the shell). I think they're pretty cool because I find them everywhere in the beaches near where I live. I also like scallops because some of them can have pretty colors, but I hate the fact that they chip so easily so I try to be extra careful with those. :P

I love shells too. Used to collect them when I was younger, when we had holidays by the seaside. Still got a few. In the UK, by the sea, there are shell shops where you can buy really pretty ones. Though finding them yourself is more fun. I also like bringing interesting large pebbles home from the coast. Ireland is great for that. Keep collecting!

Yeah here in the US there are gift shops where you can buy really pretty whole shells too, but I perfer finding them on my own. Even though I like to keep the best looking shells I can find the ones I have have minor flaws that make them more unique, unlike the store-bought shells which are a little too perfect in my opinion. :P

I think you are right, the ones you've found yourself are always going to be more special, even if they're a bit cracked or chipped. Anyone can buy stuff.

I've also got a few small circular "shells" that are the hard part of sea urchins from Greece, self found. Quietly pleased about those...

I love sea shells; when I'm on beach, I'm always on the lookout for the perfect shell. When I holiday in the UK, I usually stay somewhere on the west coast (Wales, Cornwall, Cumbria, etc) and the shells look more or less the same, no matter how far south you go. But, earlier this year, I was on the east coast (Lincolnshire) and I noticed a massive difference in the types of shells. Fascinating. :)
